Great idea for those who really want to make an effort.I find it almost impossible to throw food out ,but then I have been frugal and careful with my stores for most of my life.Nothing gets wasted in my house.Old past-their -best veg gets turned into soup.Left over bits get portioned up and frozen. My waste bag is usually one of the carrier bags from a shop, and in it I suppose is usually wrapping from food but little if any food.maybe some empty egg shells or peelings from fruit I don't garden anymore owing to a clapped set of bones
:) or they would go on a compost heap.Although if I have lemons or oranges I try to use the peel up in cakes.Coffee grounds go in the waste bin as I can't think of a use for them along with tea bags. But it would be interesting to see if others are going to rise to the challenge
:):)

I am another who wastes nothing, if I can't use it straight away I just freeze it. For example we had some sad looking mushrooms fried with our steak tonight and what was left I quartered and have popped in the freezer ready to add to a stew, stir fry, soup or something else.
I will happily follow the thread though.Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

I sometimes put onion and carrot tops/peelings in a bag in the freezer, celery root and so on. Then when I want to make stock I just tip the lot into water with the bones. I don't have to cut into an onion specially. Don't worry if there is some of the brown papery outside or the roots, you'll strain the lot. Papery stuff gives it a bit of colour."Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad"

I'm another who absolutely hates waste.
I think I do fairly well. No food waste here at all AFAIK: any cooked leftovers from meals go in the fridge/freezer for future meals. I always base next week's mealplan on what I have in so that nothing gets thrown away.
All suggestions gratefully received!0 -
I am in danger of turning into my mother and mother-in-law who had myriads of penicillin cultures in their fridges. I tend to have mine in the freezer but living alone necessitates using a little and keeping a a little. I seldom throw anything out unless in becomes a slimy mess in the salad drawer. My daughter, on the other hand, throws out more food than I buy.Solar Suntellite 250 x16 4kW Afore 3600TL dual 2KW E 2KW W no shade, DN15 March 14

This sounds like a great idea!
I have a food waste bin and, for the last two months, I have been living completely from my store cupboard/freezer and the only things thrown away have been veg peelings and scrapings from plates (minus peelings fed to the guinea pigs). I've only spent about £30 on fresh veg and milk which is great!

I'm in the process of clearing out a cupboard just now and am looking for ideas to use the following and wondered where to post?
A nearly full bag of Alpen
Lots of Porridge Oats
Some bran
2 unopened jars of mincemeat
A bag of Pecans
I have an idea that I'd like to make some sort of granola/cereal bars? could I mix the lot together and bake it? would like suggestions as to what to do with it
