Basically, a scale is made up of 8 notes, and E major is made up of the following:
E <
1st
F# <
2nd
G# <
3rd
A <
4th
B <
5th
C# <
6th
D# <
7th
E <
Octave
A normal major chord contains the 1st, 3rd and 5th notes of the scale. So if you saw that you should play an "E" chord, then you'd know the notes should be E, G#, and B. (1,3 and 5)
The "7" denotes that, on top of the major chord, the 7th note of the scale should be played- so that's a D#. (1,3,5 and 7)
We're also told that the 5th is sharpened. In this chord, the 5th is a B, so instead of playing B, you play B#.
So an E7#5 chord would be E, G#, B#, D#. (1,3,5#,7)

Ah, but Rob the song's in A minor, so it should be a D natural rather than a flat - but I don't really understand guitar tabs anyway!Total Debt 13th Sept 2006 (exc student loan): £6240.06

Nah- it's the dominant 7th. Just because the song is in A Minor doesn't mean that a D# isn't allowed. If the D was naturalised, then you'd be talking about a E dim7#5
By the way Storm, did you check out the backing track?0 -
Yeah, but the dominant 7th is in the key of the music, and no D#'s in A minor (plus on the piano version it shows D naturals later on for E7#5)
Not had a chance to listen to the backing track yet as I'm at work & the boss is in so strange music coming out of my PC might give the game away that I'm not doing much work this afternoon! (not implying the track is strange in any way, but not sure how I could convince her that Abba has anything to do with my job!)Total Debt 13th Sept 2006 (exc student loan): £6240.06

Well, a cadence is literally the final 2 chords that finish a phrase of music, the most common one being the perfect cadence (hence it's name)
To avoid confusion of needing to know the key the music is in (esp useful when just listening!) each note of the key also has a name:
Tonic, Supertonic, Mediant, Sub-dominant, Dominant, Sub-mediant, Leading Note, Tonic...
Hence a perfect cadence you go from the Dominant to the Tonic to finish off a phrase - IA will probably notice that in bass lines a lot (i.e. in C Major it will be G-C, in G Major D-G etc)
It feels strangely good to start talking about this sort of stuff again (I think I worry it will fly out of my brain forever!)

IA - your last 3 posts have made me chuckle out loud (and get strange look from my boss, oops!)
I am jealous of how you can listen to a song & work it out - I was trained classically (had piano lessons since the age of 6) and I worry about my dependance on written music - the one time I needed to work out how to play a song from a recording it literally took me 2 days to do it!Total Debt 13th Sept 2006 (exc student loan): £6240.06

Noooo!!! Don't worry IA, a lot of that theory stuff is utterly irrelevant as long as you've got a good ear and a sense of timing, which judging from your youtube video, you already have0
