The 5th hit comes up with a site reviewing various cards, the onl UK Amex one has a flat rate of cashback across all spending not more for Supermarkets etc. The only one with different rates is one for USA customers:
"Earn 3% Cash Back at U.S. supermarkets, up to $6,000 per year in purchases (then 1%); 2% Cash Back at U.S. gas stations; 2% Cash Back at select U.S. department stores; and 1% Cash Back on other purchases."0 -

Thanks zerog. It appears that I have an MBNA Amex which I acquired via a link from this site. I don't recall this site or MBNA making this difference apparent before I took the card.
MBNA has removed the benefit that I joined for, and it has taken several calls to them, with help from this thread to identify the gap in my knowledge.
It's a pity that reclusive46 didn't construct a coherent sentence when he was trying to tell me.
But, thanks everybody. My MBNA Amex card is about to be cut to pieces.0
