Write a letter, with your return address on the outside.

If your relative is still alive they'd hopefully reply if not, the letter might be returned with the comment 'addressee deceased' or 'gone away'. Then you could take it from there

  • Search the Register of Births, Marriages & Deaths in the area in which they lived (although, this may not work if they died in a different place).

Some registers can be searched online, others you have to visit in person. But contact the Registrar to see what they can do.

Death registers online only go up to Dec 2006 with the occasional one for Jan 2007. To search in a local office costs money and that is amythin from £17 to £27 pounds and only the office where they have died will have this if they died within the last 6 months.

Do you know who your relative's GP is (or could you guess). Try ringing and say you have been trying to contact your relative. If relative is not alive they may tell you.
Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.
  • When you need information that may be subject to Data Protection but is for a morally & ethically sound reason, it may be worth phoning around the local churches.

They may know your relative, may know where to look & whom to ask & are not strangled by law.

I hope your relative is alive & well, gently bemused in a carehome & delighted to see you.
