How to find out if someone has died.

I believe a relative has died, they are elderly and recently their phone was disconnected -I do not live near them nor is there any family, friends or neighbours that I know to be able to ask such a question.
How can I find out?

I don't know, maybe you could phone the Registrar for the area they lived in and ask. Even if they can't tell you perhaps they can point you in the right direction.
Things that happened years ago they have the records in the library but i don't suppose they have up to date stuff.
If there's local paper, but people don't always post obituaries these days.

When were you last in contact?

That would determine my choice of action.
  • Hi thanks for your replies -I last spoke to them in about february last year, the person is quite elderly.

I know when i sent a couple of Christmas cards and never had replies i wondered if the people were still alive, but you don't like going to knock on the doors.

The other option is ring the municipal burial site and ask if they have buried or cremated that person

In my local newspaper they do list who is being cremated or buried on that day.
You maybe able to look it up online

OK if it was yesterday I would say call the police (if a week+ non emergency)

A year ago we need something less urgent.

might have just changed service was it a land line?

Do you know where they lived?

    A letter to the address(and +-1/2)

if you think it was owned has it been sold.

if you think they had some estate the probate service for the administration.

    local papers online obituary sections.

the BV list might be on there if no relatives found/known

What relative do you know about even if you don't currently know where they are.

Can you find a neighbours phone number and call them?

  • Google - search full name and chances are there is something somewhere on the interweb.

They may just have been moved into a home - not sending cards is common amongst the elderly
