It sounds like a genuine mistake, and they have bent over backwards to treat you fairly. They discover a week after selling that the car has had a new engine. They take the trouble to call you (most wouldn't have) and offer you a full refund or a 2-year warranty and £500 cash back. You take the cash and warranty. 9 months later, the engine blows and they offer you a recon engine FOC.

I think that's exceptional customer service, to be honest.
If someone is nice to you but rude to the waiter, they are not a nice person.
  • 9 months after purchase and they're going to replace your engine FOC.. thats a good deal if you ask me! Not many would be that helpful.

As it is, Mazdas are known for popping headgaskets. I wouldn't touch a Mazda with a bargepole - no matter how nice it is and hearing that they're now putting rods and pistons through engine blocks has completely convinced me! Get your engine and sell it!

Go for something german (audi / VW / BMW [did i really just say that?]), jap / chinese (toyota, suzuki, mitsubishi), swedish (volvo, saab) or american (ford). Most of them are solid.

With a rod out the block I'm surprised they're not washing their hands on the basis that either (a) you've run it dry of oil or (b) you've been driving it round with a nasty knock developing that's allowed a problem to get (significantly) worse.

What are you on about? There are many engines that can do this without oil or knocking. Scoobies are a good example and a friend of mine had it happen to him moons ago on his way to birmingham. There are plenty of engines that this can happen to.

The car is clearly of questionable engineering quality as it's already had one engine replaced at 16k. That sort of thing doesn't happen with cars that are built properly.

    What's Mazda then? Italian?

Yes, you can drop a rod on a Scoobie by revving the nuts out of it (which, of course, you weren't doing after the event - it just let go, Guv) but a 2.2 diesel with abut a 5.5k rev limiter isn't quite the same.

Is a Mazda 3 still a Ford Fiesta under the skin?

  • They aren't known as Arnold Shark* for nothing in Glasgow, I'm amazed at the service you were offered, so take the new engine and run.

*They tried to charge me for a radio code i couldn't find for a car i had bought from them!!

What i would like, even if this is being quite hopeful is to give the car back and choose another car for the price i paid back in May last year.
    Minus 9 months depreciation.

I think you are being dealt with very fairly.

Let them fix it and ask how long they are going to guarantee their workmanship for this time.

You would be very foolish / short-sighted to do anything less.

With a different engine you are back to square one.
