50" TV help

Options
I am looking to buy a 50" tv and wondered if anyone had a bit advice.
My tv I bought from Powerhouse and took the extracare insurance, I am told, has been cancelled. It is only 3 years old and going to cost a fortune to repair. thanks for any help.

We just ordered a Panasonic Viera 50''. It has a 5 year guarantee included in its £1400 price. We bought it locally as we always deal with this shop and like the after-sales service. I think the 5yr offer has been extended until the end of July. John Lewis also has the 5yr guarantee.

Dixons were going to charge £249 for a 3yr extended guarantee.

Thank you: I have rang John Lewis but they have no stock until end July, but the Panasonic TH50PX70 is £1218 with discount code at Currys so I might just order that one. Thanks for your help.

That's the same model as we're getting. It's had good reviews. As I said i'm willing to pay the bit extra for the 5yr guarantee and the after-sales service I know I get with this shop. :)

    Enjoy your new TV.

£1199 at dixons and cash back from Quidco and £50 off using JUNE50G at checkout.

The sale of goods act states that all goods should last a reasonable length of time. A reasonable length of time is defined as :

Any question as to what is a reasonable time or significant inconvenience is to be determined by reference to—
    (a) the nature of the goods, and
    (b) the purpose for which the goods were acquired.

Given that you'd reasonably expect a TV to last significantly longer than 3 years then under the sale of goods act you are entitled to go back to the shop and ask for repair or replacement if repair is uneconomical.

Sale of Goods Act can be read here.
I've never tried what the act says but have a read through it....it also makes me think that extended warranties are a waste of money since the act should cover you for up to six years.

I would, but Powerhouse went into administration so I have no shop to go back to and I have tried to find out who the administrators are and can't find out. thanks anyway,.
  • The scheme Administrators withdrew their services as a result of the insolvency of Powerhouse and lack of funding of their services.

So I'm guessing there isn't anyone to go to claim from except the manufactures themselves.
Nothing to see here, move along.

Update: I sent a stinking letter to Allianz insurance and told them that my contract was with them and they had taken £474 off me and what were they going to do about it (in as many words) lo and behold I got a letter saying that my policy had been reinstated and a new one was on its way and also they would arrange to have my tv repaired. Now I am going to have to sell it because I have since bought a new one. Oh well hey ho at least I have a good result. :j

Do you have a room big enough for a 50 inch TV?

Very big screens don’t look too good if you are watching from close up.

    Is it HDTV compatible?
