Credit Card payment not taken by Hotel

On the 22/07/2013 I booked a hotel stay in the Uk for 1 night for the 26/07/2013 via their website and gave them my credit card details as requested. Paid for the extras in cash. Yesterday the hotel contacted me via email saying that they needed payment as I only guaranteed my stay with my credit card. Do I need to pay this after all this time. Thank you very much for all your help.

If you haven't paid then yes. Not paying for something you've bought or used is generally stealing...

Yes you need to pay. Seven months for a bill is not a long time. The plumber I use can take a year to bill me. I still have to pay him.
  • They have up to 6 years to claim the money off you.
Since your hotel stay you have been given a free loan by them for the cost of your stay - is there any reason why you should not pay?
  • Yes, you are still liable to pay but I'm surprised that they didn't take the payment since they clearly had your card on file.

I would check your statement from the time of your hotel stay and make sure that you haven't already paid. If you haven't, I'm sure they will give you a 'reasonable' amount of time to make the payment (i.e. if you were a bit tight this month then the start of next is probably OK). Not sure what they would define as reasonable though.

The charge for an overnight stay in a hotel in Japan a few years ago took nine months to appear on my credit card.

Processing it after 6 months would be a breach of their merchant agreement and it could be charged back.

Perhaps they are just being professional?

I would pay and I think you should too, but you probably don't need to. I'd be surprised if they do more than an email and perhaps a follow-up letter.

Possibly or they might send it to a debt collector to annoy the OP.

I would double check your statements and make sure you haven't already paid. Its unusual for you to be able to check out of a hotel and the staff member not charge you.
  • My question is

    Why shouldn't you pay ?
