Delayed Flight resulting in overnight stay

We were flying back from Mexico and the plane that landed from the UK to take us back to Manchester had an engine problem - it was on fire. Suffice to say the flight was delayed until 7am the following morning and we were all taken to a hotel in Cancun for the night. It was dreadful and a really rubbish way to end our honeymoon. I have used the template letter and sent a claim to the airline, but I have a question that someone might know the answer to - will the airline be exempt from paying out compensation to us because they put us in a hotel for the night?
