Dect phones and broadband problems

Hi, my broadband connection keeps on cutting off and I know there has been some problems with dect phones and b/b on the same line. I don't have any choice as my master socket is the only socket in the house. I do not have a micro filter on my line as I was told by the open reach guy that the new openreach phone and b/b combined sockets already have them built in. My wireless router and dect phone base are only about 4ft apart. Could this be the problem.

So it it the internet your losing connection with or the wireless?

The phones are probably on the same channel as the wifi. Or so close that its mixing the signals.

Try changing the channels or use a cable to see if its thw wifi or internet.

My speed drops with the microwave on.

  • As well as the advice posted by forgotmyname you could try moving the dect base station further from the router using a telephone extension cable available from many shops such as Wilkos. The cost should be less than a fiver so it's worth a try.

UK DECT phones do not operate on 2.4GHz so they shouldn't be interfering with WiFi. They don't run on the very low frequencies that ADSL uses either.

If there is any interference at all it is probably caused by a poor quality switched mode power supply.

Using a plug in phone extension can be bad news. If you do try this make sure it is used on the phone and not the router and put the filter at the master socket end.

I have used DECT phones right back since dial up days and never had any problem with them intefering with internet connections. They are a positive benefit with ADSL as they largely remove the need for phone extensions which certainly can cause problems for the unwary.
