Confused newbie... tips on over night oats !!

  • No problem.

OH says he puts the porridge oats in the bowl he will eat them in, then pours over fruit juice until they are just about covered, he says he thinks it is probably about equal parts juice to oats. He then puts them in the fridge overnight. In the morning he adds in either peanut butter or greek yoghurt (probably a tablespoon or so) and then stirs in some fruit and or nuts. He says he prefers apple juice as it is less tangy than orange. I do not think he has tried it with milk or water. He eats them cold. He said that it doesn't actually take all night and that he did a trial run or two in an afternoon before he started (how did I not notice? Probably because he is always eating something!)

He says it really isn't exact, that he has cut back on the liquid to make them less 'sloppy' and that sometimes it can be a bit tricky to get the peanut butter to mix in but he doesn't mind 'lumps'. Trust me, if he can make it then it isn't an exact science! I would suggest cutting back slightly on the amount of liquid. It sounds like that will make them a bit less runny.

We recently started mixing bog standard oats with natural yoghurt then adding dried or fres fruit. some honey really sets it off. Never soaked them overnight though.

For hot porridge I just, put oats and milk in a pan and heat. Takes, about three minutes to make.

Whoaaah - never thought about doing oats this way! Def trying this !

I'm a dyed-in-the-wool Scot who likes her porridge with salt....just salt, although I do like Alpen muesli, at a pinch.

Great idea to pop all this in individual containers, in the fridge - can give to DH to take to work (always says no time for brekkie, too much of a rush in the morning), and for me - I must admit to being a bit rushed myself, most mornings ....

Got a blueberry bush in the garden - that produces JUST the right amount to add a few to the oatmeal in the morning, every other day (never seems to produce enough for a decent batch of muffins - but this would be MUCH healthier !!). Roll on summer ......

    Thanks for the idea :T

Goodness, I never thought of just soaking the porridge oats and not cooking it. Does it just taste like cold porridge?

It's just like muesli without all the fruit and nuts :D My DH used to eat it all the time. I prefer it cooked because all that chewing makes my jaw ache :D
  • This is what I eat for breakfast, doctors orders for my IBS, apperently it's supposed to settle my tummy!

I just put some porridge oats in a bowl, pour some apple juice over untill it's just above the level of porridge oats, then cover it and put it in the fridge over night. If you don't leave it over night then its really chewy and not very nice. The porridge oats soak up the apple juice so it's not liquidy. In the morning I add a couple of spoonfuls of greek yoghurt and what ever fruit I fancy. I don't like hot porridge and this keeps me going until lunchtime.
  • Hi, I have oats every morning, I buy a bag of H/B Rolled Oats, and wizz them thr my little Magic Bullet, put it in a container, so when I get up, I just measure out one third of a cup, put in my bowl with a tsp of jam, and peanut paste or some seeds, then when my kettle has boiled for my coffee, I just pour some in my bowl of oats and stir, Ta Da! Instant brekky! So easy!
  • I recently tried the overnight porridge. I tried porridge, frozen mixed berries (defrosted in water first) and natural yoghurt all measured out per a recipe, but I found it a little too 'dry' and sticky. So I then did my own version using Oats, half yog/half milk, grated fresh ginger left overnight with a banana and a drizzle of honey added in the morning and it was IMO much nicer.

When I make it hot I just use Oats, grated ginger, splash of milk and the rest water all cooked up in a matter of minutes on the hob. Lovely with a sliced banana or blueberries.

This recipe for granola is really delicious if you like peanut butter.

  • Just thought I'd add that I tried something different.

I made some fruit tea (Ginseng and Raspberry), left it to cool then mixed it with Oats and blueberries, left it in the fridge overnight and then stirred in nat yoghurt and sliced banana before eating.

It was nice as it wasn't so sticky.
