Buying from a small dealer

Not always true. I tend to buy as much on the seller as the car.
Last 2 cars I've sold have been immaculate with no issues and sold for genuine reasons; the buyers got a fantastic deal.
Most recent cars I've bought privately have been owned for a long time by the owner with lots of history and well maintained. Some people do eventually sell cars and not because there is a problem.
HPI - I'd never trust a dealer unless they show you the certificate. When looking last year at a car from a dealer allegedly with genuine mileage, all it took was me putting the V5 ref and reg no into the MOT check and it showed the mileage was jumping from 80k to 135k back to 70k and at time of sale of 84k. If dealer hadn't checked they were as much at fault.Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.0
