Only one Sky feed at new flat

I've just moved into a new rented flat. It was pre-wired for Sky but only has one feed as the flat is about 10 years old. This means I can only record off and watch one channel at a time. Am I within my rights to ask Sky for a discount as I can't get the full service I am technically paying for? I can't switch to Virgin as it's not available on my road so I can't use that as a bargaining tool.

Yes you are within your rights to ask for that.
Very much doubt they will agree with you though.0 -

I seem to recall you also need to set it up for a single feed and set up some dummy recordings for unattended recordings to default to feed 1
Otherwise it'll just fail to recordChange is inevitable, except from a vending machine.0 -
It's simple matter to do this on newer boxes and will be performed as standard by the installer where only one feed is present.I seem to recall you also need to set it up for a single feed and set up some dummy recordings for unattended recordings to default to feed 1
Otherwise it'll just fail to record
I'm not aware of the user having to set "dummy" recordings.0 -
I don't have Sky UK so can't check and my memory is vague on it but this thread over at AV Forums throws some light on it

My old "dummy recording" trick is only required on the old SD Sky+ boxes - all HD boxes have a single feed mode that solves the problem although you can still only watch one or record one.
The Sky box hardware is capable of the same two recordings on one feed but Sky chose not to introduce this feature in their software to avoid very large numbers of calls to their customer service on why recordings have clashed and failed when two simultaneous recordings are set that would not even work on the Humax (different polarisation and/or different frequency band).0 -
Good stuff, I couldn't remember if it was still valid info
I only have a Sky Italia box at hand so couldn't really checkChange is inevitable, except from a vending machine.0 -
Just a quick update. I called Sky and asked for a discount. They only offered 10% at first so I said that's rubbish. Complained that they treat current customers really badly and only new customers get good deals. Asked to be put through to the retention team. Said I'd leave and go with NOW TV as that's only £15 per month for all the channels I watch. I also said would they rather lose £53 per month or £15 per month. In the end I managed to get 30% off for 6 months. Result :-).0

You should enquire of your Landlord or (if you own/are buying the flat on a mortgage) the building management company as to whether it is possible to get a second satellite feed installed for a recorder.
It may be easy and fairly cheap to do so.0 -
The best solution would be to clip off the existing single feed and save your money on this recycled pap. What a tremendous waste of such wondrous technology.Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0
