Engine remapping

  • The one I was looking at is custom with the vehicle going on a rolling road.

Did look at one of the predone maps which was recommended in an article (cannot remember if it was in a newspaper or car magazine now) but they dont have one for my vehicle and they say they are a long way off as they're not able to overcome the ECU protection at the moment.

The company I looked at are regulars on another forum and frequently are posting images of their jobs on other forum members vehicles and the results. They say they've not worked on my model of vehicle before but the ECU is the same as in other vehicles that they've worked on before so not an issue.

Theirs seems expensive compared to others but I am sure the vehicle pushes up the price just as most of the other after market stuff is more expensive for it than other vehicles

I'd always recommend a live map tailored to the car on a rolling road when ever possible.

That's what i'll be going for.

It means (as mines is turbocharged) the operator can see all the live data for the engine when it's under load so if the intake temps get too high, they can back off a little.
Same if it's smoking too much (diesel) the fuel pressure can be tweaked to make it more suitable.

A generic map usually doesn't take other mods, vehicle age and condition of engine into account

Mine is petrol 3.5 v6 and no turbos.

I was surprised that it has no turbos as the next engine up is a 4.7l v8 biturbo which is a fair old jump

Ahhh.. No turbo... I would expect minimal gains then. The bigger gains are usually a result of fuelling tweaks and a boost increase.

Personally i wouldnt bother on a non turbo car. If a dealer does an ECU update it will erase the remap also.

Not necessarily. I put the standard map back on mine when it goes for a service, and then reinstall the tuned map after it's done.

I have also considered putting the standard map on when my wife uses the car.

I presume thats a Bluefin or similar though. A rolling road remap will load the new data to the ECU. And you will need to take it back if a dealer wipes it.

They estimate 35-40bhp improvement and 30-35nm - as standard the car has 302bhp so they believe they can get a decent improvement despite the lack of a turbo

They say that most the times ECU updates arent wiping their changes however its a free remap if it does - not sure how I'm supposed to tell other than by the loss of the extra power etc

With the extra torque and power the engine now makes you dont need to press the throttle as far to accelerate at the SAME rate as before, less throttle =less fuel pump= less fuel used.

Sorry...you lost me when I got that bit.....

A remap took my previous BMW diesel to 350BHP and 500lb/ft of torque.

    Really transformed the car.

BUT, use a good remapper, its worth the extra ££'s

There are other reasons to remap as well. My car is an import from Japan where the fuel is higher octane. A mapper altered my ECU so the car can run safely on UK quality fuel preventing knock (premature detonation) which can dramatically shorten engine life.
