Would it not be out of the question to ask your wife to speak to her siblings for help in this matter.

I have an insurance a minimal amount I could increase the monthly total but I am now saving as much as I can afford usually 10 - 20 pounds a week this soon mounts up to a tidy sum yearly and helps as an emergency fund. Why not ask for donations from her siblings surely they can not expect that your wife and yourself have sole responsibility for funeral costs .

Surely it would have come out on direct debit?

What are her reasons for not getting a new insurance set up? Is it purely because she doesnt want to pay for it?

Plain and simple she doesn't want to pay for it, it was the Asda one she had going for a few months but I think she only set it up so she could get the £30 gift voucher from them.

    Ok.

so since then, what conversations have been had about it - I mean has her daughter said to her 'Mum we have no money to pay for your funeral and it will be done by the council unless you sort something out' or what exactly?

I guess you can just hope she has a couple grand of stuff worth selling.

This is the question we are all going to have to have in the family, it's just such a difficult thing to approach but at least I know I am being reasonable to catalyse this conversation...thanks.

It just seems irresponsible she doesnt have anything set up like this in the first place.

My parents have life insurance, and I have the details of what to do if the worst happens, and where their wills are, info about their money etc.

Why would you choose to put your kids in such a bad position?

you say your wife has siblings who are on benefits? couldn't one of them arrange the funeral and claim the funeral grant?

It was of concern to me too about my 80 year old MIL, to the point where I was putting aside money for a funeral. Then I found out she had scrimped and saved £4k for her funeral, despite having terrible windows, threadbare carpets and a 70s kitchen.

Bless her. She won't take a penny off us to do anything for her on the house either.

While the OP's first post was blunt, he struck a chord with many of us who have worried about this.

If you have no money or access to borrow any, where do you find up to £4k for a funeral (which was how much it cost to bury my FIL 18 months ago).
