Effect of Flood Claims

Well now that Tory-on-Thames has been flooded, all of a sudden money is no object. No need to take out flood insurance, the taxpayer will pick up the bill.
But how will they pay for it. Are we going to see another round of money printing and inflation rate fiddling?

I have huge sympathy for the flood victims but just on the political aspect I also wondered how "The age of austerity" could suddenly turn into "Money is no object".

What is the non-Tory suggestion then for helping the flood victims?

If a martian is looking down on us from outer space he will be scratching his head. Wondering why we build homes on low lying land when there is so much higher ground undeveloped.

    1) Planning permission to build homes on higher ground
    2) Stop throwing money at things like the Olympics, Invading other countries, The Monarchy, Foreign aid etc and spend it on boring essentials like dredging.

To me, politically slanted diatribe about governments cooking the books and speculation about what they will do next sounds like something for the Debate the Economy board, even though the economy knocks on to an effect on one's savings or investments.

Inflation and other stats get tweaked and fiddled all the time and money printing comes in many forms. However, the Bank has said today that they expect to see interest rates going up gradually from next year which doesn't stack up with continuing cavalier money printing. I know you will say that Carney is being paid ££££ to misunderstand the inaccuracy of UK economic forecasts but they are probably as good as our own.

Also there is already some political ill-will about the funding-for-help-to-push-house-prices-up schemes and various other monetary support so to appease the populace it's unlikely that they will overtly open the QE taps wider to finance some environmental concerns.

Unlikely to help the current flood victims don't you think?

Strange, I thought the previous non-Tory government had a pretty good record of starting the items you mention and a rather poor record on dredging

Absolutely:T So its not just slanted against the Tories as some commentators seem to think

You'd make a superb politician, Glen Clark, avoiding answers to questions that are too difficult to answer, and answering others with lots of words that don't actually answer the questions.

I think Glen's original post was (should have been) more social orientated rather than political, unfortunately the abbreviated use of the term 'Tory' can be attributed with negative connotations by some people. One I wholly subscribe to :D

But..... The issue is why people in the West (and elsewhere) have suffered for weeks on end, year after year, and then all of a sudden the Thames breaks its banks and..... low and behold..... money is no object.

The whole dredging milarky is a misnomer, we are unfortunately in an extended period of extreme weather. Places that have not flooded in living memory are flooding. Unfortunately you cannot be certain that building work in another area may have just 'moved' the flood somewhere else.

I live near the Servern and have had (virtually) Red Alerts for the last I don't know how many weeks.

This is an extraordinary weather event and no one could have foreseen it and i doubt (although cannot be absolute) that no amount of dredging would have averted this.
Personal Responsibility - Sad but True :D

You expressed it better than I could
Perhaps I shouldn't have used the word Tory.
    Perhaps its not political.
Perhaps its just a coincidence that austerity ended and money suddenly became no object when the floods reached Tory-on-Thames ;)
