mrmechanic, can you get yourself struck off for spouting bull, or does someone else have to nominate you?
Please reply with your proper business email address "we supply cheap cats.com" so we can all buy into your scheme.
I suppose checking the service components, usage and actual symptoms and diagnostic checks you would gloss over.

Thanks buddy, you may have a budget larger than mine!

Given how few miles you do, owning a car is hardly the most cost-effective mode of transport. Have you worked out the cost per mile?

Sure, neglecting it is a good way to cut that cost - in the short term. But if you can't afford to maintain your car properly, isn't that an even better reason to use more cost-effective transport options?

If you used a bike more, you probably wouldn't need to pay for that gym membership, either.

Not going to bite with your crap above, but I DO NOT SELL CATS.
Look forward when the op comes back after spending money on all the service items stated, saying car has failed retest and he eventually has to replace the cat.
The reading supplied indicated the cat is faulty, nothing else.
Why don't you educated me why you think this isn't true???
Are you even qualified to state the FACTS I have stated are false??
Really looking forward to this one
If it isn't broken, don't try to fix it.

I ride my bike everywhere locally, that's why I don't use the car. Then I do about 40 miles on my Sunday ride (it's a MTB) and do regular charity rides of 50-75 miles on said bike. So I do consider the cost of having a car. But I have relatives we visit regularly, 126 miles away, and I am the guy that has to fulfill that duty. So, for now, the car is essential.

The deal I have with my gym, costs me 12p/workout. No great loss.

Your engine management system is all working fine.
The catalytic converter is not efficient enough /faulty and needs to be replaced.

Once the cat gets up to temperature it will light.
This will bring the readings on CO down from 0.5/0.7 ish to around 0.01 /0.02ish.
If the cat isn't working/dead, then the readings you are getting is the best you are going to see and no changing of oil, plugs and filters will help.

Save your cash and replace the cat, it will make the limits then.,

I'm doing the mini-service not only to pass the MOT, but because it needs doing anyway. So it is not money wasted. If the service and the Cataclean doesn't work, then we will look at the cat.

Good for you. I understand and support your attitude.

I too ride a bike to work (on good days).

But it can't replace my car - nor can public transport.

Fair enough, if the service is overdue, then you are not wasting money doing these.
However, I still stand by what I have said.
Please come back to this thread and update us on the outcome.

Nice one. Iceweasel. I love my Trek 4500 MTB.

The most valued item in the house! Well, the C2 Model D may push it!

2 years since clean oil, mrmechanic. My mate needs a lot of TLC.

No excuses; just apologies. VIP from now on.

Will post the outcome for your info, mrmechanic.

I didn't see the readings and they kept the failure sheet as I'm booked in for next Weds.

Also, I do very little miles (less than 2k a year) and most of that is pootling around town or to the gym and back (8 miles) all at low revs, But then I've always done that and never had problems.

Will change air filter tho, had thought about doing that anyway. Oil filter was changed 2 years ago. Not sure when the air filter was last changed.

Will ring them up and get readings after lunch.

I may be beneficial to try a full service if you think the oil filter was last changed two years ago. I assume the oil was done at the same time.

Plugs, air and fuel filters will likely improve things.

Cataclean has a good reputation for helping older cars pass the MOT.

Regular dosing with Redex can also be helpful.

Wynns and Forte make excellent products also.

Though Wynns Professional additives seem to be more effective than standsrd ones.

Forte are mainly trade only but you can find them online.

And try to get the oil and oil filter changed once a year.

Kwik Fit are good for this.

You have the option of Mobil 1, or at least you used to.

    Just ignore any upsell.

Last time i had one done, probably about 2005 it cost less than i could buy the oil for.
