Do comp promoters REAALY need your DoB, address, inside leg measurement?

It's useful to have read this thread though - it's made me see that the DOB is completely unimportant! I'll bet lots of comp givers just put the DOB space in because it makes the form look complete or they think they should. Some maybe use it for marketing purposes - fair enough but of no interest to me. It'd be interesting to know if anyone has ever had to prove DOB on a non age restricted prize?
You maybe required to prove it because entry is age restricted and/or the product is - deal or no deal require it because you have to be 18 or over to enter.
I have been asked to prove it a few times where the product had no age restriction but bizarrely not once where it had one (20 plus alcohol wins as well as dvds/glue etc).0 -
DOB etc isn't unimportant to the organisation you're giving it to though - they need that data so they can monetise effectively. No one buys ads, for example, if they don't know roughly who's going to see them.
If you're taking advantage of a promotion, it's only right you should play fair by not giving entirely inaccurate information, surely? It should at least be ballpark accurate.0 -
Fair do's then - I'll blame it on my carpal tunnel syndrome! It wouldn't be lying - some days my fingers are more dibbers than useful tools at the end of my wrist!0

How else would you win that custom made suit you so badly want!
But, DOB is useful for age-restricted products; alcohol, tobacco/e-cigs, holidays, etc.
But, sometimes it's not been asked and I've had to prove I'm over 18 in order to win (or basically just say - YES I AM 18 years (+5) aha!) xDecember Wins: £300 worth of board games, £500 Tesco Vouchers Best Win in 2023: £500 Tesco Vouchers0 -
I also have a comping DOB - only a month out- however at some stage i must have put it a 100 years out as autofill had an option of 18xx instead of 19xx. Now that will have put the average age up!0

I use a comping date of birth to avoid people cloning me for other purposes. I am over 18 and that is the only relevant information they need. I have won wine and an ITV comp where I had to give my passport details for a trip-so had to fess up that the DOB entered was not correct but explained why and it wasn't a problem. I receive numerous Phishing e-mails from "banks" that I do not have accounts with is one primary reason I use a comping DOB and I believe we live in an ageist society so do not see that my age should preclude me from a win.0

The one that really annoys me the most is I think Female First as it not only asks for all of that but your marital status. This is not just so they know whether to address you as Mr or Mrs, why should they know whether you're single, married or living together. Its got absolutely nothing to do with anything, its just intrusive. I tend to ignore alot of their comps because of it, but since I am weak if it is a good prize I can't help but enter! But I give them abuse for it mentally every time I'm filling out the form.
Re my earlier gripe, I came across another comp from them tonight and wasn't interested in this prize so decided to ask them about it. I've asked on twitter why they need to know marital status. We'll see...!Many thanks to everyone who posts competitions and works so hard to provide all the answers!

I had a reply from Female First on twitter. They said that the 'marital status' question is optional, I think it used to be but it definitely is required now so I've told them that and they're going to look into it as I think its supposed to be optional.
But their general reply was
"Data we collect is to help target advertising-To help us understand our customers-To make our website of interest to you."
I guess that this answer could cover any question asked by any company on any comp form :-(
Anyway...there you go!Many thanks to everyone who posts competitions and works so hard to provide all the answers!
