only kidding on the last one, but surely just a phone number / email address would suffice, as they should only be contacting the winner, right? for delivery address etc).
I feel DoB only really needed, for age related products - alcohol, gambling prizes?
I am wary of giving my dets to total strangers, not knowing where it will end up!

I would imagine it is for marketing purposes.0

Use a comping DOB :-)
I have done this for years & it has never caused any issue.
It is one digit out & if asked I will blame it on my poor typing skills.
Re the address I think it is a bit vital to the process of sending you a prize. That is unless they were to just email the winners & ask for further details.0 -
Sometimes I get so annoyed at this - I truly can't see what my age has to do with anything as long as it's not a legally restricted issue. In fact, I got so :mad: with one a couple of days ago that I listed myself as 100 years old! I like weeowens idea though - I never thought to do that and so from now on I will have a comping DOB. The only question is how many years should I subtract! :rotfl::rotfl:0

I keep the year as is but "adjust" another digit :-)
It's the year that annoys me!!0 -

Yes I know exactly what you mean. Fair enough they should have a tick box to state "I am over 18" if that's what they want, but I don't see why they should have my date of birth or even exact age.
I also agree that it shouldn't be necessary to take the full address of every entrant - it would be just as easy to email the winner after the comp is drawn, asking for their address. OK that would take away the element of surprise wins turning up, but in all the time I've been comping I think I've had 2 or 3 surprise wins, as opposed to the many MANY thousands of times I've filled in my address!!!!0 -
It's useful to have read this thread though - it's made me see that the DOB is completely unimportant! I'll bet lots of comp givers just put the DOB space in because it makes the form look complete or they think they should. Some maybe use it for marketing purposes - fair enough but of no interest to me. It'd be interesting to know if anyone has ever had to prove DOB on a non age restricted prize?0

Wins include alcohol, age restricted DVDs,books and home entertainment gear including TVs & dvd players.
It may happen but I am willing to take the risk & blame it on a typo.0 -
The one that really annoys me the most is I think Female First as it not only asks for all of that but your marital status. This is not just so they know whether to address you as Mr or Mrs, why should they know whether you're single, married or living together. Its got absolutely nothing to do with anything, its just intrusive. I tend to ignore alot of their comps because of it, but since I am weak if it is a good prize I can't help but enter! But I give them abuse for it mentally every time I'm filling out the form. Many thanks to everyone who posts competitions and works so hard to provide all the answers!
Best wins this year so far: £100 Hobbycraft Voucher, £50 cash, GoPro Camera0 -

This annoys me too, so I put something different every time. One day I'm married, then living with someone, following week we're separated etc - they must think I have a revolving door in my houseA closed mouth gathers no feet.0
