You're doing brilliantly! The first 6 weeks are really hard going and I came so close to giving up many times. I'm glad I persevered as I find breast feeding quite easy now. My little one is 12 weeks tomorrow and still feeds every 90mins but often it's only for 10 mins so they feel more like top ups.
At about 4 weeks we started him on an evening bottle of formula which was a god send for us. It meant that he would get about 4 hours sleep instead of 2 hours, which gave me some much needed rest. The first bottle made him sick but the rest were fine xxDS born November 2013 :smileyhea0 -
Definitely normal and I agree it will get better around 6 weeks. I struggled for the first few weeks and had to top-up with expressed and formula-it felt like I spent the first 6 weeks either expressing or feeding, but it worked. My son is now 17 months and still bf, and I just hoped to get to 6 months! I would also encourage the use of a bottle now, my midwife told me to use a bottle straight away and we've never had a problem with him either feeding from me or a bottle. Friends who didn't introduce a bottle until much later struggled and most refused which caused issues when returning to work. It does get easier and just remember you're doing a great job.0

Well I have today tried topping up with aptimil formula and he has been throwing up all night. It wasn't too bad during the day but has been a disaster tonight and it didn't seem to extend the period he slept at all, he was still waking up just as frequently. I will persevere with breastfeeding followed by a small formula top up and see if we manage any better. I did for the first time in ages feel like he was "milk drunk" where he was limp and looked like a drunk old man which probably means he was full and content and because of the formula I did have a chance to start expressing. I filled about half a bottle and stuck it in the freezer. My plan is that at some point I will be able to go to the hairdressers and leave him with my partner with plenty of food. I'm sorry if this is a scrambled message, it's 4:15 and I haven't slept!0

Aww I'm sorry you had a bad night. Try changing the formula. We started on SMA but had to change to cow and gate. He's now on c&g hungry baby milk last thing at night, but still needs a top up from me half an hour later...I think it's probably for comfort.
Keep going...it will get easier xxDS born November 2013 :smileyhea0 -
I have absolutely no advice at all for you, apart from sleep when baby sleeps, and let someone else help with the house etc (pay someone if you need to).
You are doing amazingly well, you and baby are getting there. It does all take so much more time than we think it will but trust your mummy instincts, and you will continue to be brilliant.“Listen earnestly to anything your children want to tell you, no matter what. If you don't listen eagerly to the little stuff when they are little, they won't tell you the big stuff when they are big, because to them all of it has always been big stuff.”0 -
Thanks folks. Well today I gave up and gave him a dummy. After feeding he was searching for more food as he is confusing wind with being hungry leading to really bad vomiting. It seems to have settled him although he is still struggling with tapped wind. He has had some gripe water and will continue with that so fingers crossed that settles him. I really appreciate the support, it is good to know that I'm not alone xxxx0

You're never alone with the internet! Don't forget there are other sites to help too, netmums is really friendly with specific areas to ask questions about nearly any parenting question you may have!
Worth a try with the dummy, we gave our eldest one too, forgot to say that in my post, he was definitely using me as a dummy in the early weeks which didn't help matters! Try a different formula as a pp suggests too. Good luck, you're doing really well!! And don't forget, with the sleep thing.....it will get to a point when you can't get your kids out of bed!!! Mine aren't at that point yet, but they can come on down and put the TV on and get their own breakfast!!!! It will get better I promise xxxxx0 -
Now you mention the suspected wind, the sickness after formula and the very frequent feeding, is he unsettled a lot? Could he have reflux? Bit of a long shot but all the symptoms look that way. Some reflux is more annoyed by dairy and that could be why the formula is making him sick. Just a thought. The frontier is never somewhere else. And no stockades can keep the midnight out.0

Hi everyone, well last night I just accepted that his awake time is 12-4:30 every morning and instead of trying to feed him to help him sleep I just went with it and played with him, chatted to him and cuddled him and we were both much more relaxed. There was no vomit because a) I wasn't trying to feed him thinking that was why he wasn't sleeping and b) the dummy stopped him searching for food when he didn't need it. I'm not sure how to alter his sleeping cycle or whether it will happen naturally in time and he will eventually sleep during the night and stay awake during the day but for now, just accepting his timetable made for a much more relaxed night and I didn't need formula as the dummy stopped him searching for more food when it wasn't needed xxx0
