There's been a spate of people on MSE recently who have taken out loans when overseas then came home before they finish paying them off. Or vice versa.

Glad to see your your past catching up with you.

But to open a bank with the same provider you screwed over last time? Bit of a schoolboy error there.

A debt from 2001, which had not been acknowledged for over 6 years would not be legally enforceable - but the OP seemed to have forgotten all about the debt, and willingly gave Barclays £300 to pay it off....

Maybe get a payday loan until this is all sorted out?

Don't think Wonga were around when you did a runner so you should be alright dealing with them.

  • We do not yet know whether Barclays will keep all of the money.
If the debt was written off as say £100 then there could well be a cheque on its way to him for the balance.
Now as to where he can bank it is another question.

I opened a Cash Card Current Account with Barclays about 2 or so weeks ago.

The card and PIN arrived. I paid money into the account. I used the card a few times.

Today I received a "final statement" on the account in the post. The statement says the account is now closed and my balance (£300) has been paid out (where?) with reference "CFU"

No letter has arrived explaining why they've closed the account. I've no idea where my £300 is. I called their Customer Services, obviously, but some guy in India who answers their phone told me he can't access my account.

    ???????

    So what's happened now?

Well as the OP has been PPR'd by MSE I doubt we will be finding out
If indeed it was genuine in the first place and not a troll
