What the ****?

I opened a Cash Card Current Account with Barclays about 2 or so weeks ago.

The card and PIN arrived. I paid money into the account. I used the card a few times.

Today I received a "final statement" on the account in the post. The statement says the account is now closed and my balance (£300) has been paid out (where?) with reference "CFU"

No letter has arrived explaining why they've closed the account. I've no idea where my £300 is. I called their Customer Services, obviously, but some guy in India who answers their phone told me he can't access my account.

Possible Fraud marker perhaps? maybe your real name is linked with a fraudster who uses a name similar or the same as yours...

I had this happen to me.... it seems my name was uses elsewhere but it was a different person WITH THE EXACT name as me caused a lot of confusion.

    Check your Credit file,
    HSBC (Main A/C)
    Halifax Back up A/C
    Lloyds (Spending) A/C
    RBS Back up A/C
    Barclays Old A/C
    Nationwide Old A/C

Just Call Credit, Equifax, Experian and CIFAS. I've also opened a couple of other accounts (a credit card and a pay monthly phone) with no problems whatsoever

got to the bottom of it. Someone at the bank said the current acc I had with them back in 2001 was closed with an overdrawn balance of £100. They've nicked my £300 and sent it to "collections" to pay off that OD balance. Presumably they've pocketed the remaining £200 to buy themselves some beers

That's rather unfortunate for you but one of life's lessons, I suppose.

The £200 are likely to be compounded interest, and possibly some charges.

what did they open the account for in the first place? just to lie in wait until I paid a few £££ into it that they could seize haha

Complain and request the full return of the funds. State that the funds were for essential expenditure and tell them that they have made no effort to establish this, hence they have treated you unfairly.

Read the information in this link:
    http://fshandbook.info/FS/html/handbook/BCOBS/5/1

Ask them how they believe they have complied with 5.1.1 and 5.1.3.

Escalate to the FOS if they refuse to return the money. It will cost them more than £300 if you do this.

Don't use talk like this as part of your complaint.

What was unfair about this? The money was owed?

Nothing from this thread indicates that the money was for essential expenditure. The OP seems to be finding humour in this.
