I always get confused with all this name changing lark! Like you say, you can call yourself what you want, so why do some people change their name by deed pole?

Btw, I think it's lovely to want to take your grandparents name. :)

Some change by deed poll as it can be easier in the long run for things like mortgage applications as they want "proof" of your name. Depends what you want, some places don't care whereas others do.

    Thanks, I always wondered why!
  • My cousin has been with his OH for 10yrs and they haven't got married she just changed her name by deed poll to his surname. Is that an option for you?

    Definitely not!
  • I didn't change back to my maiden name until 24 yrs after my divorce!!!!! I had kept my married name so that my daughter had the same name as me (different times in schools in those days) and also my maiden name would have given me the same name as my mother. Anyway then 2 things happened within weeks 1 Mother died and 2 DD married and changed her name anyway. This was the trigger to going back to my own name.

So don't worry about length of time.

Whatever you do please don't pay any so called deed poll company or solicitor anything to do it. You are only paying for the fancy piece of paper.

Have a google & you will find free templates. Print them out & get a friend to witness. I need to check people's identity & I accept these equally as any paid for document.

Edited to add a link to a free change of name deed. This should be accepted by all official bodies. There is a link to this site on the gov.uk website somewhere.

I have just had a thought that with the mention of marriage and I know you say that you are not contemplating it now but things change in time.

In June I am getting married ( after a long 21 year engagement ) lol..
The venue arranged and having to deal with the new rules brought in to protect against sham weddings it has not been without complications , you will need a clear record and history of any name you have had.

This is why some people seem as bright until you hear them.

Hi - I've kept my married name and have been divorced for a while now. I kept it because I didn't want my children and I having different names when they were still at school. Also I couldn't be bothered letting everyone know, and write letters etc. Lazy beast - I know. :D
I've often thought about changing it, but my maiden name isn't anything special, so have kept it.
Also, I didn't do anything wrong, it was my ex who went off with another woman, so never felt I had to change it really. I guess I am used to it after 30 years :rotfl:
Don't worry about what other people think, just do what you feel comfortable doing. It's no-one's business but yours.

you may find that if you change your name the 'authorities' such as passport, driving licence will ask for an 'official' document. deed poll is perfectly acceptable. and not that expensive.

A 'change of name deed' should not require any expense, they can be obtained for free & is all that is required in England & Wales

A change of name by 'Deed Poll', note the subtle difference. These go through the court. Cost money & take time. They are as rare as hens teeth as completely unnecessary. There is however an 'official' record of them kept. This can be used to explain the missing links in family history which occur when someone just changes their name using a 'change of name deed'.
