supersaver1000, killerpeaty and INOD, thank you very much for posting. I thought I was just blethering away to myself so it was nice to get here and read others' thoughts. There have been further discussions with my boss which I will type after I have answered you all.
You need to look into TUPE.

Thank you. My boss mentioned TUPE to me when he told me about the transfer yesterday morning. I have learned a huge amount about employment law in the last 29 hours. The problem is that under TUPE rules, the job I do on or after the change must be fundamentally the same as the job I do before the change (i.e. now). If they make me a PA, that is a different role and therefore not fundamentally the same. I would not be covered by TUPE in that case. However, I have had further talks with my boss and it might not be as bad as it seems. See below for further update.
Hello gap, I was lurking and after reading your latest post I just wanted to give you some support.

If you don't want to be a PA, I'm sure someone would love to take you on! Accountants in general are just needed, though I have to admit I don't know anything about your specialism. :o

After a quick google, I found this so it appears that you would be in demand.

Best of luck gap. I've really enjoyed your diary thus far.

Thank you for your kind words. I live in Edinburgh so I am qualified as a Scottish Law Accountant. It is quite specialised and there are never a lot of jobs available in legal cashrooms here. I tend to find that jobs that do come up are to cover for maternity leave for 6 / 9 / 12 months. That is too risky for me at the moment, I need a full time, permanent job. See below for further update though.
Legal firm accounts are specialised so I would expect you to be in demand. I'd say go with what you're offered but look around even to the larger accountancy practices as I know that audit requirements, etc are different for law firms and they would probably value the skills of your practical experience in one of their teams. In a way I think this is really positive as you now have been prompted to consider where your future lies. Most people only manage that when facing unemployment. You have the safety net of a job. What role will your boss have in the merged firm?

Thank you. See above for job availability. My plan is to go with whatever happens. I need to be in work and if I really hate it I can look for something else. See below for further update though. I am very lucky as it could have been so much worse. Although my boss had no plans to shut up shop so if he hadn't been approached, we would still be plodding along as we were. He is to be kept as a consultant in the firm but to be honest, he has so much self-employed stuff that he runs about all over the country doing that I don't think I will ever see him. His plan now, really, is to just give up the firm.

Further update: I slept on it and realised that I don't want to be a PA. I have worked hard to get to where I am and I have single-handedly run this cashroom for the past 6 years. I have sat and passed exams to improve the quality of my work too. The cashroom was a mess when I arrived in it and although it is not perfect, it is pretty damn close and I am proud of that.

Clearly told the boss that I don't want to be a PA. He is glad to have that clear confirmation from me. It seems that when he was talking to the two guys from the new firm, he was so busy singing my praises at what I am capable of (she is the cashier but most trusted worker - if I am away from the office I just call her and she sorts it out for me) that they thought I would make a good PA (which I would) and missed that I am actually the cashier who is an all-rounder and can do anything to help out. The fact that there are only 5 of us, including him, in the company means that someone has to be able to do everything when he is not here and that someone just happens to be me. I like being able to do everything.

Anyway, after a PA/cashier discussion we had yesterday, he called a guy he knows and trusts from another firm who is going to work with the new firm. He told the guy about how I am actually a cashier, not a PA. The guy said that the new bosses obviously misunderstood and they need to be told that. He also said that they need a cashier! All is not lost. Yet, anyway.

We will be meeting with the new bosses next week so I can update further then (not sure what day yet, will be dressing well for the foreseeable, haha).

I felt a bit odd yesterday and had to get it down so thank you all for taking the time to post.

In other news, £6 to bestie's fund :)

Got a nice card for my mum for mother's day from the cheap card shop a couple of weeks back. My sis is picking up wine and flowers (I will go halves with her) so all sorted there.

Got a "make up evening" at a local hairdressers this evening. Taking LMG too (she loves make up) and we are meeting my bestie there. We get a free goody bag for going and possibly a mini make over. I won't be buying as I have far too much to save for. If LMG wants to buy, well, she gets pocket money. Bestie will buy, she always does. Her and her fiance have good jobs and can afford a lot of stuff I can't. Really doesn't bother me though, we are both used to it!

Oh goodness, this is turning into something that rivals War and Peace.

    Friday though :j

On Friday, one of the guys who are going to be the new bosses texted my boss to say that he doesn't know when they will get in to see us as his father is in hospital having major surgery. I am no further forward in knowing anything. That aside though, I hope all goes well for the father. I will update when I have something to update with. So, normal service will resume here until I get further word.

INOD The goody bag contained a sample cleanser (50ml so not too small), a sample toner (which they call softener - 75ml), eyeliner and 2 x shampoo and conditioner sachets (approx. 15ml each) so not too shabby, just unfortunate that I had to go halfers with LMG to get her foundation because it was SOOOOOOOO expensive

    2 x £2 coins to bestie's fund.

Off out tonight to a charity doo at a local cinema. It is a Grease singalong night. Someone at Bestie's work has organised it. LMG is going with us too. Hopefully it will be a really fun night.

I very rarely go anywhere so it is tiring having all these nights out! Luckily they are not costing me too much (apart from that blimmin' foundation).

Nothing else to report at the mo.

We have a meeting with the guys from the new firm at 3.30pm this afternoon.

Had a lovely night out last night. Watched Grease on the big screen for the first time! Only about the millionth time I have seen it but it was fab :)

Paid £204.12 over to the mortgage but don't want to update my sig until my internet banking updates (just in case I have made a mistake).

Some really sad news in Edinburgh today; a girl (pupil) has died at school after a wall collapsed on her. I am shocked and saddened by this. My heart goes out to her family, her friends and her teachers. I can't imagine what they must be going through. So awful.

LMG goes to a different school (thankfully) but her school is on its last legs and really needs to be rebuilt. A handful of people are campaigning against it because it is planned to be built on a park (large, green, grassy area - I am aware eveyone will know what a park is but my point is that there is only grass and some bushes round it, absolutely nothing else). The argument is that the land is common good land and people want to walk their dogs there and allow children to play. Honestly, that park is almost always empty. Occasionally you see one lone dog walker. Very occasionally. If you are out walking your dog anyway, just walk 5 minutes to the north west and you arrive at a beautiful big park with a pond, swans, a play area for kids and a burn running through it. It would be so good for the kids to get a nice new school. I don't think LMG will see the new school during her school years. By the time we win the argument she will be married with her own kids! Anyway, I hope nothing fatal happens in her school or it will be on the heads of the people who voted against the new school on the park.

Anyway, lunch is nearly over so I'm going to get stuck back into work in case these guys arrive early.

I found out on Tuesday night that the wee girl who died when the wall fell on her was the daughter of a friend of a friend. I never met the wee one but I met her mum. I am struggling to get past it. I am devastated for them.

Well the meeting with the new bosses was not the greatest. It would take far too long and far too much space on this thread to explain but I really hope this merger does not go ahead. At the moment I just have to sit it out and see what happens. I am considering now applying for other jobs. My boss is out of the office this morning but he should be back this afternoon and I will tell him what I am thinking.

Mortgage balance is now at -£94,245 :)

Grocery shop yesterday came to £1.86 over budget. Some weeks I seem to do better than others.

Put in two pairs of boots for heel repairs yesterday. I have to collect them tomorrow. £6.95 each. I should have put them in one pair at a time so I could stretch the money over two weeks but I didn't think of that until afterwards :(

Paid off the balance of the holiday yesterday, £1,000 _pale_ Just got to find the money for food and spends now. I also want to get a couple of days' park tickets so I am still saving really hard. The good news is that the holiday is paid in full and I have not borrowed :D

Thank you INOD. We are really looking forward to this holiday and although I feel guilty when I think of the amount of money I have (and still have to) spent on it, I intend to enjoy every minute. I keep looking at my wee girl and being so grateful to have her. I hug and kiss her and tell her I love her. She pushes me away haha! I keep thinking I am calmer, then I hear something on the news or the school sends us another update about the council building works and I just fill up with tears again. I still can't believe that one day a family has a lovely, happy, healthy girl and the next she is gone. If they had fixed the wall when it was first reported, this would never have happened. Devastating.

I got up to the £40 payout on OnePoll :j I should get that in a couple of weeks. Thank goodness as everything seems to be happening at once

Tomorrow I am going to ANOTHER wedding fair with both my sis and bestie! I should only need bus fares but I will take a couple of extra pounds in case I get a coffee or something. Sunday, LMG has a dancing competition in Grangemouth. The whole day will be taken up with that. I have told her we will have to take a picnic as I spend far too much on food when we go there. She is fine with that.

12th April is bestie's birthday. We don't do gifts (never have since we were about 11, before that it was the obligatory gift at the birthday party at the trampoline centre ever year!) but sometimes we go out for dinner which probably costs more than a gift  Still, it will be nice. We are heading out for a couple of hours on the 10th for it. We are going to a nice hotel in the west end that we have been to before. The four of us are going and it won't be a late night as I have to get back for LMG.

On 12th April we (family) are going out for lunch with my mum's oldest friend. They first met in April 50 years ago! "Auntie" M is insisting that she will pay but I need to take some money as she is not well off at all so she will have been saving for months for it and I want to be able to chip in if necessary.

I told the bossman my plans to look for another job. He is quite saddened by that but he completely understands my reasoning. He has said to me that I won't be out of a job as if the worst comes to the worst then he will employ me as his assistant so it would just be him and I. That is great, I know, but I need to branch out a bit first and see if I can get something more stable. I applied for a job yesterday to a big company in Edinburgh. Will wait and see what happens there. I am keeping my eyes open all the time.

That's it really. Friday though

Hi girlatplay. Sorry you aren't having a good time at the mo.

If you aren't transferring with your job, will you be made redundant? It may be worth looking into if you haven't done already

    Best Wishes
