Volkswagen GOLFs ??- HELP..Some questions!

I would really appreciate these questions being answered..
Some questions about golfs, Edited -which isn't for me by the way but for a male.
(it doesn't matter if the millage is high, and would prefer a lower priced one, second hand)
a) Does mark in a golf, just mean model?
b) What 'mark' minimum would you recommend somebody in their late 30s to buy? (as a male, in their late 30s).
In the sense that it doesn't look too old a model for their image...
But It DOESN'T have to be the latest 2-3 models,
. but as pointed out, a higher millage, older one would be fine (to get the cost down)
c) What year was this mark (that you are recommending) released?
For years, cars are becoming more electronic (with plugs to connect a usb lead), and electronic dashboards, where you can find the fault with your smartphone aps etc. but which model of golfs did they start to become electronic (from non electronic).....and what mark are they?
d) What year of golf cars did they make the golfs computerized /electronic (computer/electronic dashboard etc) (the switch over from non computerized) = eg 2006 onwards they started to become computerized.
e) Which marks of golf cars did are these golfs electronic (computer/electronic dashboard etc) (the switch over from non electronic) = eg mark 5 onwards they started to become computerized.
f) I heard computer/electronic problems can be expensive to fix.
If you owned a golf or another car, which has given computer/electronic problems ....what was the price of the repair? and what was the problem?
g) Can the spoiler for the golf which has a red light in the middle (for the break light) . Can that be purcahsed from ebay, and attached to a golf - assuming it fits in size. or it is complicated in terms of the computer/electronics ?
h) What would you recommend as a choice between a polo and a golf? have you personally owned both ?
i) Which model, mark and year upwards do smart phone aps generally work with? (ie, anything above a mark 5, smartphone aps will work with)
(I have added these)
Budget £6000 - £7000
Annual miles, about 15k (not much)
Features? would be great, but not a necessity to have that latest features
so even if it is standard + just 'some' features, would be fine
I would really appreciate these questions being answered..
Cheers in advance,
can you please provide each of your answers on, a) b) c) d) e) f) g) h) i) .cheers.

Get the latest if you want lower insurance eg a MK70
-
The coolest Golf for a bloke named Karen is the Mk 1 GTi - all the different types (Mk 1 - 7 ) with pictures can be found in Wikipedia - most of your other queries are best googled - ps your edit has just aged you ten years !
The electronics just get more and more with each model - the standard ODB2 diagnostic plug came in about 2001 but there was a less general one before then for a few years0 -
That latest might also be very pricey but mark7 is good.0

Generally speaking, unless you are in the market for a "classic" mk1 or mk2 golf, they get better with each new version.
I think the pertinent questions first to you are
(a) whats your budget?
(b) what annual miles do you do?
(c) are you more interested in extra features, performance, or do you just want the "standard" car?0 -

15,000 miles is not much? If your running a car doing 13 - 18mpg its a lot more than you think. £5000 - £7000 worth of fuel a year.
Features like 4 wheels a steering wheel come in useful you may want those fitted. You may want them to work also.
£3000 and it must be a Golf. I do hope you keep another £3000 spare to buy another one because someone is going to see you coming from miles away.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Budget has been amended, £6k - £7k
Yes, 4 wheels would be a bonus!

For such a low budget I'd be looking at a Octavia as Golfs are not great value for money so a low budget will get a lot more with an Octavia which is the same car underneath - an Octavia mk 1 shares its parts with a Mk IV Golf and the Octavia Mk 2 shares its parts with a Mk V/VI Golf. Also these 'marks' are not distinctive, they tended to be progressive so there's no cut off points for when they changed so you need to look carefully at what the car is. My Octavia Mk II is 2006 registered but it's the 2007 model year yet some of its core parts are from 2005 and there's Mk 1 Octavias out there that are newer than it.
The changeover to more electronic parts didn't just suddenly happen in one go, progressively the newer cars have more electronic features. I had two Golf Mk IV based cars (Octavia Mk1, Seat Toledo mk II) and no electronic issues with them while I've had a few electrical gremlins on a Golf Mk V based car (Octavia mk II) which had more in the way of electronics. However they weren't pricey to fix and the mk IV based cars are not immune from electric issues, a workmate had near endless problems with a sensor on a Golf Mk IV. I wouldn't get so hung up on the computer/electronic side as there's not a huge difference between them and the less computerised they are the older they're going to be which brings its own issues.
Given the tight budget I think your friend will just need to have a look and choose from what's available, it's not give that much choice.
Edit - I see the budget has completely changed since I posted although I'd still advise the same in actually just looking at what's currently available for sale in that range. There's no mention of engine or spec preferences which will considerably vary within the budget depending on the age and mileage of the car.

Yes, they did point out the original written budget, that was posted was incorrect. So it has been edited.
Thanks for your input though John, some great points0 -
Your making this up as you go along.
Try one of these instead. Well its a Golf underneath so ideal...
