I did love my peppercorn rent though. I amused me on many a night :)

Did you have a ceremonial handing over of the peppercorn, our community garden had to do that at the start of the lease. :rotfl:

Yep a real live peppercorn. ;)

Just to put the spanner in the mix, in a couple of city's in the UK (Sunderland and Leeds) there is something else, cant remember the name of it, but even if your property is freehold, you still have to pay someone for some strange sort of lease on the land. Apparently, it only happens in a few places in the UK.

The OP asked whether Freehold meant that there was no mortgage. All the answers given explained what freehold and leasehold meant, but none explained what a mortgage was, or how it related to Freehold.

    Unless I missed something ...

Its just how different people read the questions, its all good.

No, we all explained what a freehold was which is what we all read the question as. I guess we all just assumed that the OP knows what a mortgage is. Anyway she now has plenty of comprehensive answers to her question. :)
I still didn't see any wrong answers to her question though....

Looking for cheap wine, but the fair maidens of the land dont seem to want to share, and instead, our endless quest seems never ending!

I know, it is one of those quaint English terms:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peppercorn_(legal)

All to do with contract law where for a contract to be binding there must be a value associated with it, even if it is nominal.

Hence, when celebrities do charity concerts etc, there is often a contract for the sum of £1 for their services.
