Flight delay purchased to go on different flight

Hi
Myself and two of my friends were stuck in Ibiza August 2012 when Jet2 had all their flight problems around that time, we were in the airport for approx 10 - 11 hours to which we then decided to book on a differnet flight the next morning as we were sick of waitng around and paid to stay in a hotel for the night.
Would we still be able to gain compensation from the flight we were ment to be on or would that just write its self off as we got on a different flight home?
Thanks
