I suspect my computer is overheating and is the reason why it seems to just suddenly loses power and won't come back on for a while.

    Try HD Tune Free.

Not only displays the temperature of your computer but measures performance, scans for errors and checks the health status of your HDD.

    Great little utility.

Have you opened the case (if a desktop) and checked for a buildup of dust etc. on vents and fan blades, especially if it lives on the floor? Laptops are a bit more awkward because they are less accessible but remove as many parts as possible - memory slot covers, battery etc., open DVD drive - and give it a good blast with a can of compressed air, including the air vents. I had this problem with a laptop and had to take it outside to do the cleaning because there was so much gunge coming out. Cured the overheating and shutting down though.
  • I've had a go with Speccy and it's coming back with 39-40C. So I don't think my computer is shutting down due to overheating.

datostar - no dust (well maybe a few specks).
Will have to investigate other possible reasons...

What kind of computer is it and what is the operating system?

Any details you can give would be helpful, I had an issue a while back when it was one of my memory cards that had decided to play games.

  • my laptop (hp pavilion G6) seems to overheat when its on charge, the fan speed/noise increases and it gets fairly hot underneath. when you remove the power cable it stabalizes shortly afterwards.
  • I have a Medion desktop computer, Windows 7. There's no rhyme or reason why it suddenly shuts down when it does. It's like it loses power and has enough to start again and not to stay on.
  • When you you say 40c that the computer itself?? does it show temp for Graphic card?? CPU?? even northBridge off CPU as these overheating will shut down your PC.. ( Graphic card over heating will shut off or crash the system)
There is a free software the record temp off all these componets think it called ALDA64 or somthing im not home so can't tell you...
If it not the Temp then you should start looking at power supply..
Does it shut down in a normal way or just switch off??
