My council house is freezing!

Just to confirm council houses are cheaper to buy but my rent is about the same amount as it would be if i was to private rent. I havent come here to have a debate about council housing or private as It all depends on the situation and where abouts in the country you live. I think people have a very false view of council housing and just because i have had the opportunity to have a house for life i should just let my daughter suffer? I dont want this house for life....I want to be able to get on with my life so i can move on and leave the house for someone who needs it as much as i do at the moment, i have took action to solve the problem myself with draught excluder's extra thick curtains extra blankets etc but all of this means nothing if the house itself is letting in cold air. I know there are people a lot worse off than me and I deeply feel for them but if there was anything i could do for them i would. All i was asking was for some advise as to what i could do to make my daughter comfortable in her own home. Thank you to those of you who gave helpful advise0

Just another thought, have you made any complaints to the council? Is the cold and damp causing any health problems for your daughter, as the council may take more action if you could get your GP involved.
I really sympathise with you, we brought our new born daughter home to a cold, damp, draughty house, and dampness can cause all sorts of problems for children. We only stayed until the end of that lease and then left, I really don't think there's much you can do, there just needs to be work on the property.
Keep on at the council, your MP and are there any housing associations you could try and transfer to? I know this all depends on your area, and the demand for housing.
Good luck.0 -
OP
I do feel for you. My partner told me about his mum when they were kids. They moved into a house sounding very similar. She went through all the hassle getting nowhere.
She ended up one day losing it and packed a picnic basket up, took her youngest son with her ( who suffered from Cystic Fibrosis) and went to the council offices. She asked to speak to the guy in charge. Was told non available, so she set up the picnic in the middle of reception. She was told she couldn't do that, but she said it is warmer here than my home, I am not making any trouble, etc.
Hours went by and people looked at what she was doing. Finally 6 hours later, a man came to see her and asked what it was about. She told him about the house. He drove her home, came into the house and looked around. The next day she was given keys to a house 50 yards away. They moved in that night, even though there was no kitchen fitted yet.
I know this was extreme, but make a nuisance of yourself a bit. Mither your councillors, phone up every day. As you say you are not scrounging, you pay your way, with no help from anyone and they do have a duty of care to you.
One thing they will do though is when they take the old back boiler out, they will fit an electric fire or board the hole up, but if the house is warmer then that should be ok.
Good Luck and do make a nuisance of yourself, but don't do anything foolish.0 -

Ignore the morons, they wouldn't be so ignorant if they found themselves in a similar situation !
It almost makes me wish that something rotten happens to them.
Any way back to your problem, if you feel that you are being treated badly or not receiving the service you should expect then you can complain to the Local Government Ombudsman.

I hope this helps and you manage to get something done about the condition of your home.0 -
It`s almost as if , because OP is in a council house , they should be greatful for the bricks and mortar , and the heat is an added extraNever, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.0

Thank you to everyone who put helpful advice, i am most grateful and im sure your advice will get the ball rolling. As for the people who made themselves look idiots i hope you continue do do things like this in the future because you really made me laugh at your stupidity especially the benefits street remark lol we live in a country full of toffs who hate people who live in council houses lmao. I hope one day u live through hardship and end up in a damp old horrible council house too hahahaha oh and dont forget all the benefits you will instantly have when you move into a council house. Funny because the only money i get off the government is if i find a quid on the council office floor.0
