Tom Tom with live traffic updates
  • Well I can recommend the TomTom EU ones as I have one that has taken me all over Europe. Since they are all the same price, go with the tomtom :)

I prefer Garmin to TomTom, all things being equal I would go with Garmin every time. ;)

Comparing the two, the Garmin has a bigger screen (useful), more map coverage (could be a plus depending on where you are going) and longer battery life (not that important as it is usually plugged into the car).

Tomtom.every time.basic model for around £75 would be fine. Buy something else at your peril..
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

Garmin every time - especially with free lifetime updates.

With the Garmin Express app updating the maps is a dawdle.

A sat-nav is only as good as it's last update.

Longer battery life and case is good too as it is very useful exploring new locations on holiday.

I regularly use mine indoors when planning trips - I take it out of the car when parked of course.
  • I guess this thread shows it all comes down to personal preference. At the end of the day, they all do the same job and they are the same price :)
  • Tom Tom charge very high prices for their map updates. Plus they don't always act on information you give them. I've been pointing out to them for four years that a certain junction I use regularly is no longer a dog-leg junction but a roundabout (on a main A road near the M6) but they still haven't amended their maps.

  • Do you have any friends with one that you can see in action?

As others have said, it is very much personal taste and theres no way you can tell without really seeing them in action.

I used to have a tomtom but my new car has built in sat nav so dont use it anymore but I massively prefer a number of features of the tomtom despite it being much older and in theory more basic than the built in.

Havent seen Garmin in action, a friend had a budget one satnav (think it was navman) and it was terrible
