    Anything with five doors.

    This.

I've managed with a tiny 3 door Toyota IQ as our family car for the last 2 years, been to cornwall and back for a week, and abroad to france. Stuck a roof box on it for all the crap. Most of the time its just one person in the car, so anything larger is complete overkill.
  • A basic Nissan Micra 1.2 (the bubble shape one 03ish onwards) will be really cheap to buy, insure & run. Available with 5 doors too.
  • Save every penny you can.

    Pass your test.

Then repost. Perhaps putting a figure for "low budget" that includes the first year of insurance.

And define family. How many adults and children will ride around in this car?

Then consider not getting a car at all as it costs to get, it costs to keep on the road and it depreciates so you need to save to replace it.

I'm nineteen years old and hoping to learn to drive this year. I have a toddler daughter and am looking for recommendations on what car would be best on a low budget.

    TIA,

Don't buy a car, walk instead. Don't be lazy now lol.

It is nice to walk, as it gives fresh air.

and you will also save on petrol too! :D
  • sort out an insurance budget 1st . Whwn my eldest passed we looked at quotes ant ethery thing from a fista to a vectra and there was not a lot in it.
So personally i would get the biggest car for the bits and bobs little kids generate for a pass time but do the test before you get the car other wise its dead money as you cant drive it .

As a young driver, expect to be paying as much as 3k for insurance, maybe more.

Insurers, basically, don't want to unsure people under 23 or so. Maybe in the country in a very low risk area you might manage to get something reasonable but when I was 21 back in 2009 or something in Manchester I faced prices over three thousand, and prices keep rising.

I got around it by getting a classic car, but I wouldn't call it family friendly.

I'd go for something like a Fiesta maybe? And leasing is certainly a "cheaper" option short term - all car leasing have a deal on a fiesta that you may want to see but it is only 3 doors.

For a first car / new driver you don't want to touch leasing; it'll cost a fortune, you won't qualify for the free insurance, insurance premiums are likely to be higher, you'll be committed to the car for a long time and you'll pay through the nose for any damage you inevitably do.

You want to get a smallish runabout for the first couple of years and work your way up. Go for what's cheapest on insurance, which may mean running hundreds of quotes, and try for some less common cars as they are often cheaper.

Herzlos, that's not really true at all. Compare leasing price against financing the car and you will be surprised. In terms of the insurance that is grossly misguided - insurance is not really affected AT ALL by being leased. I can confirm this as I lease a Citroen C1 and the quote for being under lease / owning were exactly the same.

When it comes to the cost of damage of course you should pay for it, but where you get it fixed is up to you. If you owned the car would you just leave the damage on a brand new car?

    Low budget, first car?

It'd be an 8-10 year old Corolla or similar for me
Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.
