Good First Car for a Family.

I'm nineteen years old and hoping to learn to drive this year. I have a toddler daughter and am looking for recommendations on what car would be best on a low budget.

As a low budget first car??? The cheapest one currently on Autotrader is £11k!

An idea of the likely budget would be helpful, but the real killer is going to be the insurance cost and this will be a major factor in the choice of car.

I think at that age, whatever is cheapest to insure! Anything with 5 doors, small engine and low insurance group

With one child I doubt you need a family size car. But preference should be 5 doors and a decent size boot for a pushchair etc.

At your age and being a new driver when you get there be prepared for insurance to be over 1k more than likely.

Now I feel in sensible mode. I reckon on a small car I am afraid. Small engine to build up experience and no claims discounts. As Building Surveyor says be prepared for high insurance as a new driver.

How much on average is insurance for a 17/18 year old having just passed their test now?

Does cheap include £3000 for insurance or do you have that saved already?

My daughter wanted a freelander. But at 18 years old and just passed her test the cheapest insurance was £5800. Which seemed rather high for a car up for sale at just £600.

Since when was a turbo charged 2 litre engine a small engine in terms of a 19 year old getting insurance? don't be silly.

Small engine = 1, 1.2 etc

I think that was meant to be tongue-in-cheek !

But as all the rest have said, insurance is definitely going to be the overriding factor. Have a browse through some small-engined cars that you like the look of, then before you do anything else go onto one of the comparison sites and get some figures for insurance. This is likely to sway your decision to a large extent.
