Businesses are there to make money you are right but not rip people off with unfair charges. I assume you also think it right for banks to charge unfair fees, holiday companies to charge extra in term time, wonga to charge extortionate rates and the list goes on. Have you never been hit with fees you thought unfair? And were clearly stated in the t&cs i might add. This is why the watchdog is there. There would be no need for a watchdog if we let companies do what they want and charge what they want. But hey lifes unfair and the businesses are raking it in.
READ before you buy - is that unfair ?????0 -

You are right about the watchdog: http://www.passengerfocus.org.uk.
The Office of Rail Regulation and/or The Department for Transport have approved these fees.
If you want to change this, then you need to talk to your MP.
It is said so often on this board, this is a Consumer Rights board, not a consumer wants board.
There simply is no point in anyone telling the person asking for help something which is not true, is there?0 -

I get that and i said the op should have read the t&cs. Just because they are the charges does not make them fair. People read the fees for banks before they go overdrawn does not make the fees fair.0 -

I have not told any lies i simply stated my opinion on fees and what needs to be done about them. I think as consumers we have a right to fees being fair.0 -

The watchdog is there to ensure the rules that are laid out are complied with. The rules have been complied with, they are £10 for an advanced ticket change. The watchdog does not define the rules.
Yes some have fees that are excessive, but I choose not to do business with those companies, which is my right. I will tell you something, if you read what alot of people do to companies here in this forum in various shapes or forms, or on HUKD you will see the amount of abuse of 'rights' the consumer commits on businesses.
Businesses are far from raking it in, far from it, the only ones currently 'raking it in excessively' are the utilities, and guess what, they are do so with approval. and within the rules...go figure.0 -

Hi everyone
Thanks very much for your responses!
I agree that I should have read the Ts&Cs however I would have still bought the tickets because I fully intended to make the journey, unfortunately I got my dates mixed up and booked it for the wrong ones. I think it would be better service if the trainline had perhaps a short window for realising you've made an error but I accept that would not be something they had to do.
I think £10 is not excessive if you decide a week later that you no longer want them.
I see that this is not a consumer rights issue but perhaps they should think about their customer service, I will be booking directly with the operators from now on.
To the people who have said life isn't fair, thanks very much for the useful advice!0 -
If you agree it's not a consumer rights issue, why's it on the consumer rights board?

I agree it's a little harsh of a policy, however I see their point of view. I'm always ridiculously sure to triple-check everything these days.0 -

You might have trouble finding a rail operator that doesn't have a £10 admin fee for refunds.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
wouldn't you know it.
One of these days every website is going to have an 'are you absolutely sure you want to buy these goods/services' button because no-one seems to read the T&Cs before they purchase!
£10 to change a ticket? So £40 to change 4? Wow!
With a second button on the following window saying 'are you really 100% absolutely sure you want to buy these goods/services' .0
