One has to wonder what the men in these countries know about FGM. Do they know what an un-mutilated woman's genitals really look like? the incidence of FGM is so high in some countries I think men think its the 'norm'. that 'all' women are like this.
I just get this feeling that its women who are mostly perpetuating this. it surely can't be 'pleasurable' to men to have sex with women who are often badly mutilated. and what is the point if the woman cannot produce a live baby? or even become pregnant?
I watched a documentary on this - I don't think its the same one people have mentioned already - I think it was called 'a day I'll never forget' - and like you previously mentioned, its the women that do seem to be the driving force behind it in some communities - its crazy.0 -
Well done all for signing the petition...

Whether you agree with the need/method of raising awareness, this is one person gathering the support of others and making a difference.“Listen earnestly to anything your children want to tell you, no matter what. If you don't listen eagerly to the little stuff when they are little, they won't tell you the big stuff when they are big, because to them all of it has always been big stuff.”0 -
The key to eradicating this horrible crime is awareness and education. so this is a very promising start - it isn't enough just to make it illegal (especially if nobody is ever prosecuted for it).0

People have been prosecuted in France for allowing this to be carried out on their daughters abroad. We should be pressing for the same here but it's not going to be easy. How many young girls are going to admit it's been carried out on them if the result is that their parents could be prosecuted and perhaps jailed?
The only way to save these girls, some as young as five or six I believe, is to make them aware of it and how it is not considered normal or desirable here and how terrible the potential health-risks are both immediately and in the future.0 -
its the parents who need educating - I am sure they cannot be aware of the health risks. Prospective 'Husbands' also need awareness and education. surely they would not want the risk of a wife unable to conceive, or carry a baby to term?
am I being naïve here in thinking that educating people with so many thousands of years of cultural 'pressure' can work?0 -
This sounds a very positive organisation. http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2014/feb/06/alternative-to-circumcision-prevents-girls-suffering-kenya
