  • If you paid tax have you checked tax rebate ? When I phone them about tax I always find them great. Have you checked your tax code? No idea what it should be though.
In fact once you ve figured out the first month, have you checked through the ways to save guide on main site. I found it was the little things that added up and made permanent improvements in my money .

Mental health nurse for short but don't dispel my benefit bashing status :D

Good luck but really once short term is sorted get long term under control and these guys know their stuff. Taking frustrations out on them won't do any good long term, though I see your immediate short term needs addressing before you get to that point. If I thought you were a "waster" I'd never suggested WTC.

Anyway I'm bowing out as no nothing about debt as I'm a saver and don't get it, so will leave you in hands of the experts.

Hiya, thanks for taking the time to reply. I always feel that I'm spot on with my tax as I've been doing self-assessment for years, but worth a phone call ;) thanks x

You may actually be my angel :)

    income:
    weekly tax credits: £155
fortnightly housing benefit: £300 (next due 17th Feb)
four weekly child benefit: £130 (next due 24th Feb)

    expenses:
    rent : £925 1st March
    fuel: £145 due asap
water: £78 due 17th Mar (I owe for the last 2 months aswell, though someone said earlier that water isn't due this month?)
food: £35 per week will be fine for veg and consumables [plenty in the cupboards/freezer to make meals from scratch]

thanks for your help :) x

Why thank you, I'll just go dust off those angel wings :)

Typically I lost internet connection not long after asking those questions so couldn't respond again!

I'm glad it helped though because now you've had a good few suggestions from some other helpful posters. I'm glad my post helped as I could see how frustrated you were.

I hope you are able to sort those figures out then & agree the rent payment in stages to your landlord. I'm sure he would rather have it in stages than not at all.

Good luck & let us know how you are getting on. If you need any more help I'm sure there will be more helpful posters.

I think the advice from LittleMissGiggles123 is spot on but ill try and offer some help as well.

Ive had a look through your SOA and pulled out your main "priority" bills.

When I got into a situation of not being able to cover the main priority bills I stopped paying everything, canceled all direct debits / standing orders and waited for my next pay day, this meant the money could be paid to priority bills and what ever was left could be split to non priority bills / debts.
I would recomend you do something similar, stop all payments until week begining 3rd March.

    1. Take all your income between now and March 3rd and save it, dont touch it or use it for anything. By my calclations you will have

    £620.75 Tax Credits
    £600.00 Housing Bennafit
    £130.00 Child Bennafit

    Total = £1350.00

    2. When you have this money you can pay

    £925.00 Rent
    £144.24 Gas and Electricity
    £76.88 Water
£12.55 TV Licence (Check this, its usually £12.12 BTW)
    £160.00 Food

    Total = £1318.67

Surplus - £31.57 (Either put this into the Overdrawn ballance or into an emergency fund)

The above means you have paid the most priority bills just using your bennafit payments and should be able to going forwards monthly and hopefully this will help cover the short term problem.
This leaves your student loan to cover everything else and you can then start looking at the long term bigger picture.

Well, as a compromise, her Dad said he would pay her the money that he would be due to pay to the CSA and then to me. He did the calculation and I know it's less than the CSA would take but I am not a complete and utter nasty person and would not leave him in financial problems as he has a young family too. I am happy for her to have the money, she bought herself a new laptop which she pays off monthly, as well as paying her phone bill [i thought my mum pad that, but I was wrong] and she has said tonight that she will pay her bus fare. I've told her to buy her new clothes instead so that's a change. If I went to the CSA, her dad would get the hump and stop paying her straight away, which means I'd have to cover all those costs until the CSA got their act together. Last time we tried the CSA, it took them four months to even write him a letter. So I'd have to cover all those costs for that time, on the assumption that I would eventually get some money off him. She's turning 16 soon so I'm not sure how long he would need to pay anyway. Also, she is going through an extremely hard time at the moment [long and private story] and her Dad and I are talking for the first time in almost ten years. I wouldn't want to put her through more pain and lose that for her for the sake of what might/or might not be more money.

    Does that make sense?

I didn't realise I could just say what post I had mentioned something in. Thanks - I'll do that in the future.

I'll sell the car. Doubt I'll get much for it, but it all helps :) x

Yes it does help, i wondered if it was for the reason it would cause problems like you described.

Yes sell the car (check sites like webuyanycar or put it in the paper, must be some scrap yards near you who would pay for it) but it would mean the money in your soa for car can be redirected for other things.
  • Anyway, contrary to what everyone seems to think there is a service that provides budgeting help and can sort out my bank accounts, pay my rent and other bills, DDs and SOs for me. Have been in contact with them for the last two days, just filled out all the forms and waiting for my LL to confirm from his end and then I can go ahead with everything.

As per previous helpful posts I've also contacted my LL about paying the rent a few days late in March and April and so paying it in full. Am going to pay for fuel, water and food but nothing else.

Contacted Thomas Cook about my holiday [waiting for a reply], looked into selling the car [waiting to hear from various people] and teenage daughter is on the eBay case to sell what we can.

Have spoken to my family and the kids' dads and have some more help with their birthday parties, so that will be minimal (if any) payments from me.

So, I do listen and I do take on advice from helpful people. I just don't like being insulted and picked on/bullied by people who should know better as "everyone" seems to have been in my situation at some point!

Thanks so everyone who helped - I finally feel like I'm getting myself sorted :)

£100 min scrap value round our way on the radio

As well as the easy to budget stuff cars are probably the biggest for easy to miss off the budget expences when they start to get old.

A lot less to worry about and far easier to manage with travel passes and the odd taxi, with hire for the bigger trips if they become necessary

    who provides the service ?
Vuja De - the feeling you'll be here later
  • If this company you have found provide a budgeting service, have you asked if they offer advice & training too so that you could eventually take it back from them. I'm assuming they charge a fee? If you can eventually take it back & budget yourself, you save having to pay that fee.

Sounds like you are a bit more positive now anyway. Good news about your landlord accepting the payments a little later, certainly helps you out a lot!

    Good luck
