Leaving a 30 day SIM-only contract early

Thanks to some very bad planning, a friend is looking to leave a 30 day SIM-only contract with Virgin Mobile early, and port their number elsewhere (the number has been with Virgin for some time, it's just the 30 day contract that's new).

I assume this is possible, but is it going to be a right faff? If this were to happen, then presumably they'd just get charged for the whole month's contract (plus any usage over the allowances, of which there should be none) whilst forfeiting receiving the service for the remaining half a month or so - is this how it would work?

The costs aren't significant, so aren't a particular concern.

    If you have just took the contract out you have to have the contract 1mth before you can cancel so it will be 2mths you will have to pay four.

    It's not the first time I hear this. Why?
    I have never seen the T&C saying that the notice cannot be given during the minimum term. In this case the minimum term is one month.

    I have heard this before as well. I think its people misinterpreting the T&C. The t-Mobile one i am on just says 'you have to stay with us for one month'. Which i take as being i will be charged for a full month regardless of when i leave. They also say you need to give one months notice. So if i take the contract, then give a months notice - that is the one month isnt it.

    I don't know if this means it or not but the quote was from T_Mobile terms

    Minimum Term

    If you choose a 12 month plan, you'll have to promise to stay with us for 12 months.
    If you choose a 30 day plan, you'll have to promise to stay with us for 30 days. If you choose a 30 day plan and you decide to upgrade or cancel your contract, you'll have to give 30 days notice to us by phone.

    So my reading is you have to stay for 30 days and then you have to give 30 days notice to leave.

    If it's a new contract Virgin offer 14 day change of mind, should be possible to cancel under that if it's a new contract.
    That is correct, you have 14 days since the day you recieved your sim only contract to change your mind.

    To return the contract or even talk to our customer care team please call 789 when calling from the Virgin Sim and select the option that you want to cancel or 0845 6000 789 (from any Landline) it will be a shame to lose you as a customer.

    You can also check out our website to see if there are other deals which may suit you best.

  • Is a 30 day plan not just a rolling plan? No commitments. Surely just cancel the direct debit instruction after paying Month 1 and that's it.

    Worst advice ever. You won't have cancelled the contract, just the method of paying, so you'll end up missing the payment that's due (as you've cancelled the direct debit, not the contract), may incur further costs, and can wreck your credit file.

    You're not in a contract though, it's a 30 day rolling plan, no commitments and I'm pretty sure the payment is taken up front each month.

    I would pay the first month, inform them you are cancelling immediately and then that's it. Most of them require 30 days notice so I guess they may bill for month 2 even if you don't plan on using it?
