It is possible to run the Win XP Operating System as one of many other OS as a guest on virtual machines hosted by an other Operating System that support virtualization on the same computer hardware.

I am still running win2000, though I have just cobbled together a Win 8.1 replacement. Running Win 7 at work.0 -

I don't think this will help the OP
I don't see the point of running XP virtually (except to see how things look to an XP user) unless you need to run a Win16 program, in which case you might as well just use Windows 3.1.0 -
Can't you use a flavour of Linux and install something like GNUCash or KMyMoney ?
It's free and legal and newer than XP... I thing KMyMoney does imports of Money and maybe Quicken files...Goals

Or maybe because the operators have no 'real' access to the OS and only have basic access for routine operation. I'm guessing that anything like an OS upgrade would have to be done by the ATM vendor.
We have a few pieces of equipment like that - only the vendor could possibly upgrade the OS as we only have remote access.0 -

Yeah, my bad. I really did mean to say ATM vendor when I talked about operator.Sorry for the confusion.
Depending on the design, it could be anything from hard drives, to CF / SD cards to flash chips that need JTAG to flash a new OS onto them. So the vendors (the manufacturers / designers ) would be the only ones that would do it.Goals

Install a linux distro like LXLE, or Solydx as a dual boot with XP. (ideal for old computers). That way you still have XP for your favourite programs and for those times you want to be really secure such as online banking boot into the linux side.

Although the above link deals with windows 7 and ubuntu the guide is applicable to any windows/linux dual boot installation.0 -

Again, it's a closed network. They direct-dial or use a fixed line to the provider. I daresay there's proprietry security on them that doesn't allow anything that's not essential for their function to happen.
When I was at uni, a group of us (BSc Computing) students tried to dial into a cash point at a local shop (we knew it had a modem in because you could hear it). We got the total of nowhere.Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?

and exactly how much experience did you have hacking ATMs at that time? Knowing what you were dialling into, how much cryptographic experience and knowledge did you have?
The last similar system I had any experience with you couldn't direct dial it. The system only ever dialled out.0 -
Using Windows XP beyond April 2014 on a machine connected to the internet is simply unacceptable in terms of security. Do it if you want but no-one will be sympathetic if (when) things go wrong. Major browsers and anti-virus software will continue to be updated which will help but only partially, and they will end support at some point too.
You can expect vulnerabilities and exploits to pop up almost immediately as those who have discovered them wait patiently for their golden opportunity. Doing something like internet banking on such a machine is madness.0 -
In Sainsbury's yesterday, and saw one of their tills starting up. Windows 2000.0
