if you are talking about identical designed houses, just one with a 2.5m or so gap to it's neighbour and one which is joined, there is no way that gap is worth £50k
There is a house opposite me which is a terrace, identical plot to 2 others sold on the same release which are detached, it sold for £300k, as did one of the detached, the other sold for £310k, but had 2 extra parking spaces.
Detached houses are on average worth a lot more, but that is because they are on average much bigger and have much more land, but when you compare like with like, the difference is largely wiped out.
More to consider when comparing terraced and semi's. As well as the obvious extra neighbour, you have to think of access to the rear garden. If the terrace rear garden can only be accessed through the house then that is another negative. Some terraces have access round the block and down the side of the nearest end of terrace, others through an alley way leading to the bottom of the garden. I've seen some council housing that have covered walkways between the houses.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. Just to add my experience to debate, my wife and I have been looking to buy a house in the last 18months and have not even looked at semis or terraces. When renting we looked at a couple of semis but opted for a detached as we wanted lots of garden, privacy and no direct neighbours. We have now opted to build a new detached house as everything on the market was not suitable (and we looked at many houses). We are not in the UK but the principle remains the same; detached houses are MUCH more desirable so when prices are rising they will go up % wise by AT LEAST as much as a semi...0

what do people think to link detached houses? does noise still travel through the garages?0

I used to live in a link detached property and I can safely say never again. Our houses were linked by next doors garage which happened to be attached to out living room wall.
When we first moved there, the couple that owned next door were lovely and used the garage for a car and storage. We had no noise issues.
They moved out about 8 months later and the new neighbour was a nightmare. Amongst many other issues, which I won't bore you with, he turned his garage into a gym. He was a kick boxer and attached a massive body punch bag to the rafters in the garage. He would then kick and punch the bag every day for 2 or so hours and all day on a Sunday.
Every thud and grunt could be heard in our house. Our walls used to shake and pictures fell off the walls. This also caused some pretty serious cracks.
He would also start doing DIY at about 10 at night and we could hear everything.
You could also have the issue that next door could turn it into living space and effectively make your link detached into a semi. This would have effected the price in our area as generally link detached are more expensive than semi's.Debt at LBM (March 2006): £30,000
DEBT FREE SINCE APRIL 2008!!!! YIPPEEEEEE!!!!!0 -
I feared that's what they would be like! suppose one at the end with the garage linked to the next garage wouldn't be so bad. Makes me wonder why developers came up with link detached houses in the first place?! why not build the garages at the bottom of the drive0

Having never lived in a detached house does quality of life significantly improve?
I hope so, I've just bought one. After years of living in flats with some very noisy neighbours, currently the neighbour through the wall plays the guitar loudly and badly, and the neighbour upstairs likes his television to be LOUD, I decided I just didn't want to risk buying a semi-detached house as it only takes one noisy !!!!!!! to ruin your quality of life.0
