I am looking to replace our old desktop PC with a laptop. Desktop runs on Windows XP so as will no longer be supported think now is a good time.

However am bewitched and bewildered by choice. Especially given that desktop is very old and therefore anything is an improvement!

Ideally looking for something that could be docked into old monitor, printer set up if using at home. It is a Dell monitor.

Use it mainly for internet, emails and writing essays for my uni course.

Have a child who will start secondary this year.

Husband uses for fantasy football.

Have NUS card so would be good to get student discount if possible.

Husband uses pc for Itunes to add stuff to Ipod but library is stored on separate hard drive.

Would be grateful for any help, suggestions! Feel free to ask any questions have tried to put lots of info in post but no doubt forgot something!

Thanks in advance.

  • sounds like a fairly standard laptop would do.
you don't mention budget but there's a huge sub-£300 laptops thread in this forum, check out on there :-)

Some details of the PC may be of use.
Might be inexpensive to upgrade. So you can run it alongside the new laptop instead of scrapping it.

    149GB Hard drive
    Processor x86 Family 15 Model 75 Stepping 2 AuthenticAMD ~2004 Mhz
Memory 2gb (assuming I should take the figure from the virtual memory in system info)

OK think I have found the thread but not many current deals. What about this one

That is not old. It will run Windows 7 or 8 easily. You can also upgrade the Graphics card for improved performance.
Will look into it when I'm back from dinner.

Let me know the Service Tag, written at the back of the machine.

Also you can check RAM installed by pressing the Flying Windows key and whilst holding it down, pressing the Pause Break key.

1.93GB RAM. Service Tag unreadable afraid. Was thinking laptop anyway so can work on Uni assignments at odd moments and away from home but if relatively cheap could upgrade PC as well as know hubby not keen on laptops!

a backup and factory restore will make that run like new, don't let xp update paranoia make you throw a perfectly usable machine away, just backup.

If you go into the BIOS then it should be in the system information page

Afraid that is beyond my capabilities!!

Not sure how much use would be as was a refurbed one and therefore may not have original parts.

To be honest was thinking laptop anyway and XP issue was final straw!
