Would you get a dog from a dog rescue centre?

  • They were in a big huff there as we were on holiday and there was not a couch each (the checked thing is an old curtain we take with us to use as a throw).

Eesh. How dare you not purchase another couch for the duration of the holiday? ;)

Get an old dog so your 7 year old learns about responsibility and you can understand the requirements of a dog easier as it should be calmer. It also means you likely won't be 'lumbered' with the dog when your child goes off to uni etc.
  • Hiya, I have young children and previously my son was bitten by a rather grumpy, elderly, Yorkshire terrier (not ours!) so when we decided to add a dog to our family it was vitally important to me that we knew the history of the dog. We researched breeds carefully to decide which would fit in best with our family, and we actually decided to get a puppy. I got a LOT of flack about this on a different forum, I honestly do wish we could have rehomed an older dog, but given my son's previous experience with the Yorkie, I wanted to be able to train the dog from day 1. If I had teenage children or was on my own, then without question, I would have rehomed.
After about 2 years of research we bought a beagle. They are a lively but affectionate breed and have gentle temperaments. We have since added a second to our "pack". And contrary to popular belief you CAN let them off the lead - both ours have good recalls, but it doesn't stop me panicking a bit when they dart off!
  • NEVER EVER AGAIN. We took a six month old adorable puppy, and he could never be left on his own for the 17 years of his life. I could write a book about it.
Best to see the pup with his Mum. Dogs, like children are damaged by early abuse.

My dog never made it to the rescue centre.

The yorkshire terrier wandered loose into the shop where the Mrs works.

    No chip, no id.

But she has breast cancer. Been to the vets/advertised and all that. Painless so just run its course. 9 months doing ok.

Imagine dumping a dog on a caravan site which me, the local animal charity, and vet assume.

What type of people do this!

This is a dismissive comment. I financially support Dogs Trust, and gather up blankets and other things they need. It is not always the "best way forward", especially for inexperienced, or rarely at home people.

I have seen the same attitude from the Cat Protection League, when they bring feral kittens to homes. They brought one to my home, and my son has her now. This is because she was so afraid of my other calm cats that she would dirty herself. She lives under a bed, comes down for food and vanishes again. Cats need handling before 12 weeks, and dogs need kindness from an early age.

Your comment is vague, and it is not thought through for the animal or the owner.
