I guess sometimes it depends with me.

For cobs/baps/rolls, I might use cling film so they stay together but sandwiches are a bit better built so can hold together in a sandwich bag.

I very rarely eat sandwiches but when I make them for my OH I use either his lock n lock sandwich box or a cheap A$da smart price white lidded lunch box.

I made cloth wraps for our sandwiches, DD takes them to school and DH takes them to work when I make his lunch (although he did mention some of his workmates think I'm crazy :o). DD's lunch box seemed to come home with a lot of rubbish everyday and I'm trying to do "waste free" lunches as often as I can now.

The wrap is just two big circles (maybe 40cm diameter) of fabric, sewn together, turned and top-stitched, and could be done by hand if you've the patience. Some fasten with velcro, most get a rubber band round them. They just go in any 40 degree wash and triple up as a placemat and a napkin!

Edited to say that mine aren't "wipeable" but having made half a dozen, that's enough to use a clean one each day, it's hardly any effort to wash them (I don't even iron them anymore). There doesn't seem to be a problem having the food just in the fabric and it could possibly be more hygienic than a plastic mat because it gets washed each time rather than just wiped. I might try making one or two wipeable ones anyway!

  • I made some wrap and mats over the weekend, so far they are working well.
We spend a lot of time camping, and I liked the idea of having your food on a clean placemat if you are using camp picnic tables
