Update to Windows 8.1

Even using my Microsoft log in account yesterday it wouldn't let me update. However, at least I now seem to have it sorted and the download is at 66% so going OK I think, albeit slowly!
Will use the Local account for everyday logging in and, as suggested, keep the Administrator account for updating etc.
It's a huge file, about 3GB I think, hence the slow download. Installation will take quite some time too depending on how fast your machine is of course.... DaveHappily retired and enjoying my 14th year of leisureI am cleverly disguised as a responsible adult.Bring me sunshine in your smile0 -
I strongly suspect your local account is an administrator-level account. Otherwise you shouldn't have been able to create another account from it. If you go to User Accounts in Control Panel it should tell you for sure. Will use the Local account for everyday logging in and, as suggested, keep the Administrator account for updating etc.
So you may want another, non-admin account for everyday.0 -
I can help here. I had this problem with someone else's computer.
You need to set up a new account as administrator, and make it a connected account (set up your link to Microsoft). You must have this to be able to download 8.1 update from the store.
After you can delete this account if you don't want such. Should solve the issue. 8.1. is very much worth it!Friendly greeting!0 -

Thanks, that is what I did this morning and the download seems to have gone well apart from the annoying orange arrow in the bottom left corner telling me where the start button is!
Just taking a while to get used to Windows 8 and now 8.1 but must move with the times!0 -

It didn't take too long really, just under an hour (but felt longer) what with all the restarts etc. It's a new Dell and is working well.0 -
Microsoft have really mis-managed the whole update to 8.1 in my opinion. I don't know why it couldn't have been rolled out as a service pack, as was done in the past, instead of making users download this huge file manually from the Store - which in my case is a place I'd never visited before, and probably never will again!
Anyway, it seems Windows 9 could now be in the offing: http://winsupersite.com/windows-8/threshold-be-called-windows-9-ship-april-20150
