I have my new desktop up and running. I now want to upgrade from Win 8 to 8.1. When I click on the upgrade button in the store it tells me to log on as an administrator.
As far as I can see from the User Accounts I am the Administrator. However, it says it is a local account and won't let me change it. I have tried logging in to Microsoft using my email and password and am still being told my computer needs administrator rights. I had assistance setting up the computer initially and the guy who did it didn't set a password for me as I am the only user.
I presume I now need to set up another administrator account. Can someone confirm this is the next step and is it straightforward?

If you didn't set up another account then you will be the admin. It should pop up a uac box and just ask you for your password again. If not, go to control panel, user accounts, manage accounts. You should see your account listed as member of administrators. If not, you can hit properties and select the group membership tab. Try adding it to administrators. See if that works.0

I am set up as Administrator - it clearly says this but Microsoft are insisting I am not and won't let me download Windows 8.1.
Will try out your suggestion.0 -
I have gone to the control panel o both my desktop and my laptop and I do not see this on either machine your account listed as member of administrators. If not, you can hit properties and select the group membership tab0

You probably need to select "view small icons" on control panel in order to see the user accounts option.0

I am sorry but I cannot see what you are referring to. I always view my control panel using view small icons.0

Have you clicked on user accounts, then manage user accounts?0

Only option is Manage other Account or Manage Your Credentials0

Strange, you should see loads of other stuff. Are you sure you are in control panel and not the windows metro style account settings? Go to the metro start screen and type control, then click on control panel.0

Infact you can change it from the metro account settings screen. Choose other account, then select your account on the list that shows up, then edit, then change to administrators.0

I can't see it either on my laptop nor the pc. Laptop is Windows 7, desktop is Windows 8. Will leave it now until the morning as I have other things urgently needing my attention.0
