Wrong side of 50 and a nice area i would expect the premium to be less than half that.

Maybe all your rich neighbours make lots of insurance claims?

My wifes car is 4 months old and is less than a third of that, but I thought £600 with 2 teenagers on a 1.5 Almera was pretty good! That was fully comp with work use. It was Direct Line because they recognise my no claims, maybe I should shop around.

    It is. ;)

Toyota Yaris, Ideal learner car, cheap insurance, and reliable as anything.

  • Rover 45 diesel is near the top of the reliability charts - solid engine from the 90s, good on fuel and cheap to insure.
The only issues usually found on MOTs are the usual items - brakes, bushes etc.

I'd recommend a Volvo S40 - you can pick them up for next to nothing and they have a cracking reputation for reliability.
I bought a 2002 diesel S40 this time last year for £500, and it has covered 15K without letting me down once.

Jap or Korean. At this price range, my vote goes to a Suzuki Ignis.
