Cheap reliable car?

I'm looking for a cheap car with budget about £1000- £1500.

I have no interest in style or performance but something that has a better than average chance of being reliable and reasonably cheap to insure as I'll be including a couple of learner drivers.

Nissan Almera is top of the list, in fact it is the only thing on the list, at the moment. Any other ideas?

Cheap to insure will depend on the insurer, Your age, Your postcode.

I could insure my daughter on a 1700cc Volvo than a 1L Corsa.

Fiesta, Focus, Mondeo. Stick to petrol models. Cheap to buy, and cheap to fix.

I'm the wrong side of 50, with a long no claims history, in a fairly prosperous area, so I tick most of the boxes for insurance. I picked an Almera reg from Gumtree, ran a quote and it was coming in at £600 which seemed quite good.

I put over 80,000 miles on a works focus in about 4 years and it didn't need any repairs of note so I'm quite tempted by that, but I thought they would fetch a premium price?

What do you think of the nissan does it count as Japanese? I had a mitsubishi space wagon for quite a while and it was good, but I reckon the carisma would be hefty to insure?

I've added the Fabia to my list and will keep a look out for a reasonably priced one for sale locally.

Wrong side of 50 and a nice area i would expect the premium to be less than half that.

Maybe all your rich neighbours make lots of insurance claims?

My wifes car is 4 months old and is less than a third of that, but I thought £600 with 2 teenagers on a 1.5 Almera was pretty good! That was fully comp with work use. It was Direct Line because they recognise my no claims, maybe I should shop around.
  • Hyundai Accent, and other similar Korean cars from before they became fashionable.

Don't rule out Proton either, will be derided by those who used to poke fun at Skoda.

Punto. Ours have been very reliable. I have a 1995 ELX90 model still running well .
