Arranged to hand in phone on Monday shall let everyone know of the outcome.
    What do you mean?
AFAIK proper unlocking doesn't require any actions with the phone itself, and the IMEI is all the unlocker normally needs.

Chances of being them being caught and audited are low, but that does not make the process legit.

I use "legit" to mean the guy isn't a scammer and will do what he is paid to do.

Handed handset over, advised he would need handset over roughly 4 days, backed everything up to computer, restored it to factory settings prior to handing it over, also took a picture with another phone of IMEI number in the settings page.

Advised the reason why he required to hold onto the phone was so that he could enter numbers which come through, requires to reset phone to factory settings upon different times whilst carrying out unlocking process.

He also advised it would be a proper unlock ie I could,d restore device to factory settings as many times as I like, update to latest software as they come out without it affecting unlock in any way.

Shall keep everybody updated as soon as I get device back.

You seem to get conned. AFAIK, there were some procedures for 4/4s, but not for 5.

The only way is to make corrections in Apple database. After this AFAIK the phone just needs synching (connecting to iTunes?). No resets and no any numbers entered.

I'll be happy to be proven wrong though.

Correct, no reason to hand the phone over, once updated on the apple server you just need to insert a different network sim and it will be activated, you dont even need itunes anymore

Hmm,not handed over any cash, interesting points, shall hand over cash once I'm able to check with different sims, carry out a factory reset.

I appreciate it sounds like a con,but I'm willing to give the guy the benefit of the doubt,as soon as phones available to collect shall write in.

Thanks for tips/help and support provided so far..

I am no expert, but if they modify the software in some way, the effect can remain after the reset. However, any future OS update can get it locked back if the database record wasn't changed.

You've been told this from the very start, but for some reason decided to ignore this.

Hi everyone just spoke with the guy who has confirmed when phone is returned it shall remain on ios 7.0.4 as it was handed in.
He was more than happy when I suggested updating software to 7.0.5 prior to handing any cash over ensuring it works the same with an updated ios.

I would be more concerned with what he is actually doing with your phone, as said previously there is NO reason for him to have your phone if unlocking via IMEI.

When you get it back check the screws at the bottom of the charging dock for any scratches that would indicate its been opened, hope the bloke is as honest as you say, he could do anything with your phone, swap parts etc....
