Hello, we are thinking of moving to Harrogate (we live in West Yorkshire at the moment) and wondered if anyone here would share their experiences of the area please?
My son is 18 so I am not worried about school catchments now, but any advice about good areas or areas to avoid, population make up etc would be very gratefully received please.
We have very bad neighbours so don't want to make a mistake of picking a bad area again.
Thank you.

Well it is all really price determined.
The areas range a lot in price. What is your definition of a bad area? Roughly how much do you have to spend? Want old (loads) or new (less). Do you mind 1960s/1970s houses? do you want to be able to walk into town? How many beds do you want? Flat or house? Do you need parking? Garden?
I would imagine how much you can spend will determine what areas you can afford. Over 500K for a house you can have most areas except Duchy. less than £500k and the areas are reduced.June challenge £100 a day £3161.63 plus £350 vouchers plus £108.37 food/shopping saving
July challenge £50 a day. £ 1682.50/1550
October challenge £100 a day. £385/£31000 -
My experiences?
I had afternoon tea at Betty's once. Very nice.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0 -

I've been to Harrogate a few times recently, to visit relatives. I can't claim to know the area that will, but it strikes me as a typical Yorkshire town, if that makes sense.
I don't know Duchy, but the houses I've seen , typical family 3 bed semis in a nice street etc are asking around the £170k mark. It certainly seems cheap up there compared to the south east, but then that probably accounts for most northern towns.0 -
Harrogate is lovely its where wealthy Yorkshire folk go to die.
The character changes at night, tell your son to watch out for the Young farmers out on the lash, who don't get out much and can be a tad lairy.0 -

Thanks.
Budget £170K. Looking for 3 bed house, with small garden and driveway.
Don't want to be in a council estate area (sorry don't mean to offend anyone there) my definition of bad area is anti social behaviour against your property/person and families who think it's ok to have their kids out all hours screaming and playing out in the street, or even their garden at 11pm at night. I want to feel a bit safer, have a bit of quiet when I stick my head out my front door, and not worry about my property being damaged.
Ideally within 15 mins walk of a train station (I work in Leeds) or along a bus route that goes into Leeds is fine too. Although we drive most days to work, I would like the freedom of getting to work reasonably easily the times my husband is off work, or away.
No preference for age or style of house.
Would be happy to know of other areas around Harrogate that are considered nice if you feel it's out of our budget.
Thank you0 -
If you use the website police.UK you can check out the crime stats for harrogate, and it shows you which roads crimes were reported on.. so that should help you identify where anti social behaviour has been reported.0

I love Harrogate but where you end depends on what you are willing to pay. There are some bad areas, but also some very good parts. Cold Bath Road area is my personal favourite as it's close enough to town, but far enough away if that makes sense?
Have you though about the surrounding areas? Where would you be working \ commuting too? Have you thought about the schools? I know there are a couple of private schools in the area too if they are for consideration, otherwise some decent bus\rail links too and from Leeds \ York0 -
And just seen you're working in Leeds, so perhaps Weatherby is another option - in between Harrogate \ Leeds, lovely little town.
I think for your price range though Harrogate may be a little too high - again I'd suggest surrounding areas, otherwise Ripon is another part which should meet your needs - although the bus to Leeds is about 2 hours from there0 -

That's very helpful to know, thank you for that.0
