have to wait 30 days for repayment

I am totally outraged about what HMRC are doing, I did a payment plan with them last year and did my self assessment by the deadline, they gave me a figure of how much I owed, and it was immediately taken from my account with them. They then gave me a overpayment figure, so I requested a 1000.00 of it to go into my bank.
I was a bit dull to think it was a immediate request, and only found out yesterday how long it takes.
I did the request on line and had a receipt and transaction no. So when i checked my bank account a couple of days later still no sign of it. I went back into the web site to look for a phone number to talk to a real person, well that was a adventure itself I kept getting fobbed off with other directions prompting me to go to other areas on the web site, you can just imagine my patience melting at lava proportions.
Eventually got the no. in my excitement forgot to write it down :rotfl: On comes a posh robotic lady, who asks me questions which I firstly politely answered , she then did the big mistake of telling me to go to the web site for details, going into total meltdown is putting it mildly:doh: I had to put the phone down, cool down and go through it all again, and still this robot was adamant I go on web site, so I said it like it is to her:mad::mad: and do you know I am convinced I heard a smirk in her voice (is she a real person pretending to be a voice mail )as all of a sudden she transferred me to a real person. This lady told me I have to wait 30 days for a repayment of MY money, yet they take it in 60 seconds flat, she gave me a !!!! and bull about why, something to do with it has to be 30 days from the last payment they received from me before they can give a refund. I am livid is to say the least.
I would love to know if anyone else out there is in the same boat, at the end of the day, if 1.5 million had not done their returns by the deadline, even if half of them will be entitled to a repayment, they will make interest on our money for the 30 day they keep it.
Totally Wrong!!

Why did you do a payment plan with them?

Are you sure it isn't "upto" 30 days. It is usually done a lot quicker than that, usually within about 10 business days.

I had a bigger than expected tax bill last year so they gave me time to pay it, so I decided to keep paying in so my tax was covered for this year.

That's what I thought, but she said that it will take 30 days from last payment from me, ( I cancelled the debit) before they can issue me with refund. I told her I didn't want it all out only a 1000.00 it doesnt make a difference she said.

So you took more than 30 days to pay them?

I had a tax bill in January 2012, that was much more than I expected, I didn't have the full amount by the deadline, so they gave me a payment plan, only once they do this with you, and I had paid it off by July 2013, I continued to pay the weekly amount so I would have enough to pay them by January 2014. I paid what I owed, but am entitled to my overpayment back. According to the web site, overpayment can take 4 weeks to get paid back, that is why I phoned them direct. The advisor on the phone said it will be 30 days. I am angry that if you owe them money they take it straight away, you are threatened with court and all sorts, the difficulty it took to do that payment plan it left me in debt every month. it was embarrassing. And all along the calculations must have been way out, as I have this overpayment.
The 30 days according to her on the phone is from when the last payment from me went in to their account . But when I go into my account on hmrc it tells me how much is there and how much would I want repaid, which I did straight away, I didnt require the full balance back of what they owe me just part, and you are allowed to request this. What she has said is bull, she was pulling at straws as my account told me different. I checked my bank account today nothing, its discusting, next time (I hope I never do again) I owe they can wait for the full balance.

Welcome to the modern UK tax service. Keep checking. it's not that unusual for payments to be further held up for "security checks" which is "slow pay" in plain English.

  • There's apparently a specific type of fraud that relies on repayments being issued shortly after payments in have been made. This 30 day limit is to prevent that fraud from occurring.

(Also, on your other point, they always give you 30 days to pay them before any late payment penalties etc are charged)

For any users who are new here for tax return season, chrismac1 always says this. He has yet to provide a shred of actual evidence to back it up.

You don't have to take my word for this. Just Google "HMRC security checks" and follow some of the links which are not from HMRC. You will see numerous posts from baffled taxpayers being slow paid.

Follow my own posts on this subject. EVERY SINGLE time I have challenged HMRC to "tell me what the checks are so I can help you to resolve them" they have immediately released the funds.

    They are a disgrace.
