Thank you all for your advice, sorry for not responding sooner but I have been experimenting with different coals and following all the advice on lighting, air controls and quantities of fuel to the letter. Being a novice I was nervous of putting too much wood or coal in but I now put plenty in to get the temperature into the silver 300 mark. I swopped from taybrite to ecoal50 which I find burns better. However my room still remains only Luke warm. The stove is hot and temperature is correct but where the heat is going I can only guess is up the chimney. Could it be my flue isn't right for my chimney? Any ideas?0

Was the stove installed by a reputable firm and did they fit a register plate? This is a metal plate that effectively seals off your chimney, with just the 6" diameter pipe from the stove going up through it into the liner?
The only way I can think of heat vanishing up the chimney would be if a stove was fitted without a register plate above it.
If your stove is registering the correct temperature on your thermometer I'd then start wondering if it is actually big enough for the job.
Have you spoken with the retailer and/or installer?0 -
Installer was registered but sub contracts to the shop that I purchased the stove from. To be honest I wasn't impressed with him as he works as though he hasn't a moment to lose and then on to the next job. He didn't light the stove as I had had plaster work around the stove and this needed to dry out but he never came back. Just gave me the instructions and left me to it. I had a difference of opinion with the shop over the smoke control kit which alleycat on this forum was able to help me with. So very reluctant to go back to them or the installer. The stove size calculator shows it should be 4 to 5 so seems the right size and I do have a register plate fitted but I did notice there is no seal around the hole at the top. At what distance from the stove would you expect to feel the heat.0

I had a slimline hunter herald 7 fitted and last year it was so poor I wanted to rip it out and get a new one.
Then I purchased some heat logs and they kick out the heat and work so much better than kiln dried logs and taybrite.Nice to save.0 -

Then, with respect, you are driving your stove incorrectly. There is no way that heat logs can generate as much heat as smokeless fuel, weight for weight, if you are running the stove in the correct way. The maths are quite definitive on that, whatever heatlog retailers like to say.0 -

I really don't think you have much choice other than to call in a professional for advice at this stage and as any claim you may have will be against the retailer/installer, that is where you have to turn for redress.
It's next to impossible for someone on an Internet forum to try to diagnose a problem beyond the basics of how a stove should be fitted and to get a fire going and running and you seem to have covered that. It may be that the calculator was wrong (they can be, especially if you have an unusually cold room) or it may be that you have a faulty stove or an incorrect installation but without a professional opinion from someone who has seen the installation, anything from other users beyond the basics is going to be guesswork.
I realise that isn't what you were hoping to hear but I'm not sure what anyone else can say.0 -
I agree with what you say. It has been good to receive the advice from yourself and others on the forum just to ensure that the fault didnt just lay with me as a novice to stoves and not operating it correctly. I am going to contact an independent registered fitter to see if the will come out and look at my stove and advise. At least I now can say with confidence that I know how to light and operate the stove thanks to the forum. I need to do this as at the moment I feel that I have spent a lot of money on a stove that is only ornamental. Thank you all for taking the time to respond to my query.0

Thank you. And may I ask that you post the outcome? I know not everyone reads historical posts but some people do and it's very possible that whatever solves your problem may help someone else in the future.
Good luck!0
