HDMI cables do not have version numbers and should not be marked with them. See the HDMI website for more information.
The version number refers to the chipset in devices with a HDMI socket.0 -

You will find the reason they do mark the cables with 1.3 and 1.4, is there is 2 versions of hdmi, standard and high speed. Different data speed 76Mhs and 340Mhs, hence the reason they mark them to distinguish them apart.Mansion TV. Avoid at all cost's :j0 -
This outfit's cable used to be recommended on here as doing well in independent tests and being pretty good value http://www.thatcable.com/
I think it was the only way we used to settle arguments between the 'it's digital and doesn't matter' group and the 'actually under certain situations it does but this particular cable is supposed to be pretty decent' lot

I tend to just buy Amazon basics HDMI cables for anything over a couple of metres.
For the very short, basic connection between say my media player/cheapy blu-ray player and my TV I sometimes use pound shop ones (which often seem to be in the same packaging as Tesco/Morrisons/Wilko's etc).0 -
So is there an benefit from these expensive cables and are the gold plated ones better? What recommendations can you guys give me?
Perhaps you could buy some of these:
http://www.amazon.com/Diamond-Digital-Ethernet-Connection-meters/dp/B003CT2A6I/
And when you get them, do an a/b test with the PoundLand version. Post your results here. They're Audioquest Diamonds, and they currently retail for $2,694.75, which seems ridiculous until you account for the exchange rate, in which case they're only as much as a decent meal and a couple of bottles of champagne.
My philosophy is that if there is a difference - and there isn't - then neither you or I can tell. It's like the audiophile market; a bunch of men in their fifties, sixties who claim that they can hear incredibly subtle tones, even though their hearing is shot because they're old men.0
